Futures' look book. Understanding tracks of future design aesthetics : a comprehensive framework

The research aims to outline the area of investigation that deals with Aesthetics, Future and Design. After an initial exploration of the reference literature, the paper aims to critically investigate experiences related to the future from an aesthetic point of view. Through the aesthetic analysis of case studies belonging to future-oriented Design, the research outlines reference parameters for the generation of a framework for the classification - but also for the generation - of objects contextualised in future scenarios. The following work is divided into two parts. The first concerns the delimitation of the field of investigation, focusing on state of the art. The origins that led to a solid dialogue between Design and Futures are investigated, through the designers' responsible dimension towards the future and the planet. Then Futures Studies are presented which, like Design, provide a perspective dimension, by using the scenario as a design tool. The practices of Critical Design, Design Fiction and Speculative Design are the means through which a narrative of possible future realities is developed. Thereafter the investigation shifts to the literature on Aesthetics and its specific measurements for products. Ten principles of aesthetic evaluation proposed and tested by researchers in recent decades are described. In the second part, the investigation shifts to the phenomenological level: anthologies of case studies that aim to analyse the connection between aesthetics and attributed meanings. The result is a perspective on Design that reveals its ethical dimension, where the form is one of the means through which objects transmit values and meanings. In this part, the paper deals with the understanding and selection of the aesthetic tools previously presented. Furthermore, the Cone of Futures by Voros (2003) is presented as an additional tool to the principles of Product Aesthetics, to define a framework. Through the latter, case studies are analysed, which were chosen among objects set in future scenarios and designed by both freelance designers and multinational companies. The objective of this research is to examine the state of the art of Aesthetics in future-oriented Design and to propose a framework to analyse products set in future scenarios. The relationship with Futures brings the practice of Design back to its origins - linked to the dimension of projection over time - and that of Aesthetics to parameters that allow measuring sensorial, but above all visual, perception of the human being. Future developments of this research should focus on testing the framework on a certain sample of people in order to verify its validity. Moreover, in order to make the framework also a generative tool, it would be necessary to implement it, also keeping in mind the material aspect as an integral part of the aesthetic interaction.

La ricerca mira a delineare l'area di indagine che si occupa di Estetica, Futuro e Design. Dopo un'iniziale esplorazione della letteratura di riferimento, l’elaborato si propone di investigare criticamente le esperienze legate al futuro da un punto di vista estetico. Attraverso l'analisi estetica di casi di studio appartenenti al future-oriented design, vengono delineati i parametri di riferimento per la generazione di un framework per la classificazione - ma anche per la generazione - di oggetti contestualizzati in scenari futuri. Il seguente lavoro è suddiviso in due parti. La prima riguarda la delimitazione del campo di indagine, focalizzandosi sullo stato dell’arte. Sono indagate le radici che hanno portato a un solido dialogo tra design e futuri, attraverso la dimensione responsabile dei designer nei confronti del futuro e del pianeta. Quindi sono presentati i Futures Studies che, come il design, forniscono una dimensione di prospettiva, utilizzando come strumento di progetto lo scenario. Le pratiche di Critical Design, Design Fiction e Speculative Design sono il mezzo attraverso cui viene sviluppata una narrativa di possibile realtà future. Dopodiché l’indagine si sposta sulla letteratura riguardante l’Estetica e le sue specifiche misurazioni per i prodotti. Sono descritti dieci principi di valutazione estetica proposti e sperimentati dai ricercatori negli ultimi decenni. Nella seconda parte, l’indagine si sposta sul piano fenomenologico: un’antologia di casi studio che mira a analizzare la connessione tra estetica e significati attribuiti. Ne emerge una prospettiva sul design che rivela la sua dimensione etica, dove la forma è uno dei mezzi attraverso cui gli oggetti trasmettono valori e significati. In questa parte, l’elaborato si occupa della comprensione e della selezione degli strumenti estetici precedentemente presentati. Inoltre, il Cono dei Futuri di Voros (2003) viene presentato come strumento aggiuntivo ai principi di estetica del prodotto, per definire un framework. Attraverso quest’ultimo vengono analizzati i casi studio, scelti tra oggetti ambientati in scenari futuri e progettati sia da designer freelance, sia da aziende multinazionali. L’obiettivo di tale ricerca è di esaminare lo stato dell’arte dell’estetica nel design orientato al futuro e di proporre un framework per analizzare i prodotti ambientati in scenari futuri. La relazione con il Futuro riporta la pratica del Design alle sue origini – legate alla dimensione di proiezione nel tempo – e quella dell’Estetica a dei parametri che permettono di misurare la percezione sensoriale, ma soprattutto visiva, dell’essere umano. Gli sviluppi futuri di questa ricerca dovrebbero vertere sulla sperimentazione del framework su un certo campione di persone, per poterne verificare la validità. Inoltre, al fine di rendere il framework anche uno strumento generativo, sarebbe necessario implementarlo tenendo presente anche l’aspetto materico come parte integrante dell’interazione estetica.
