This thesis aims to study the gear testing methodologies and equipments. In particular, it is focused on the revamping of an existing test rig, in order to upgrade it and make it usable also nowadays. Firstly, a literature review about gears and their lubrication is presented, with a particular focus on the loss of lubrication condition in helicopters and geared turbofans. Furthermore, different types of gear test rig are analysed, in order to understand their characteristics and the different types of tests that can be carried out on them. A second part, instead, takes into consideration the analysis of the test rig object of this study, defining its actual characteristics, focusing on the mechanical side. Improvements of the different mechanical parts of which it is composed are proposed and summarized in different level of revamping, with the aim of performing both traditional and Loss of Lubrication tests.
