The topic of the thesis is the redevelopment of the Porto Vecchio in Trieste, a former disused port area on the outskirts of the historic city centre. Built in several phases starting in 1868 by the will of the Hapsburg Empire, the complex is part of a unitary structure that has been in disuse and decay for over 70 years. The opportunity for its redevelopment comes following the cease of the area as state property and the transfer of ownership of many buildings to new holders, which brings along a series of projects. Our proposal is linked to this series of single events by reinterpreting the joint area with the city itself, referred as the "strategic node". In the intervention area on which we focus, a project design is proposed that allows to reuse the existing buildings, inserting new destinations in terms of light restoration, and to redefine the connection with the city, the gateway to the Porto Vecchio area.

L’argomento della tesi è la riqualificazione del Porto Vecchio di Trieste, un’ex area portuale dismessa alle porte del centro storico della città. Costruito in più fasi a partire dal 1868 per volontà dell’Impero Asburgico, il complesso fa parte di un organico dal costruito unitario che si trova in condizione di disuso e decadimento da oltre 70 anni. In seguito alla cessazione demaniale dell’area e del passaggio di molti edifici a secondi proprietari, la trasformazione del Porto Vecchio inizia a cogliere alcune occasioni per la sua riqualificazione, partendo da progetti puntuali. La nostra proposta si riallaccia a questa serie di eventi singoli nella rilettura dell’area di collegamento con la città stessa, il “nodo strategico”. Nell’area di intervento su cui ci concentriamo, viene proposto un disegno progettuale che permetta di riutilizzare gli edifici esistenti, inserendo nuove destinazioni in chiave di lettura del restauro leggero, e di ridefinire il collegamento con la città, la porta d’entrata dell’area del Porto Vecchio.
