Villaggio olimpico MilanoCortina2026. Polo direzionale di Porta Romana

The aim of this thesis is to focus on the role of the high-building culture in the context of the European city and the link between the art of building and the Milanese spatial culture. The aim will be reached through a design process that involves the tools and studies achieved in this study programme. A long process that lasted more than a year and that took place inside a complex context, the pandemic scenario. The high-rise building does not only condense social and working life, it pushes over a synthesis that requires essentiality, by impressing, within the building, an image in the mind of those who live inside the city. By taking advantage of the opportunity, offered by the project for the Winter Olympic Games of Milano-Cortina 2026 and its Olympic Village, we designed the Olympic Committee’s headquarters in Porta Romana. The complex will be composed by a pair of towers and a new railway station. The space that these three elements generate is a place of aggregation, of passage and rest that proves the rapid changing of a part of Milan. Due to the constraints of the area we had to make a decision about the relationship between what we wanted to design and the restrictions that the area imposed, like the railway path, the park and the existing station. The result is an architecture that hierarchically orders the space that surrounds it, that allows us to measure the landscape, by looking away. The new towers face over great distances along the other high elements that compose the skyline of the city. So, the skyline of the city is enriched by a pair of towers that identify the project area of Scalo Romana. The ultimate meaning of our architecture is the precise match between architecture and structure. Our project has been involved by its architectural, structural, MEP, technological, energetic, economic aspects. The workflow has allowed us to make these disciplines dialogue together thanks to the BIM environment, the new generation of digital design. If the construction was the origin and the architecture is the cause, the thesis is only a pretext to investigate them.

L’elaborato esplora il ruolo della Torre nel contesto urbano della città europea, raccontando lo stretto legame che unisce l’arte di costruire alla cultura dello spazio milanese, attraverso una progettazione che si avvale degli strumenti appresi durante questo lungo percorso. Un esercizio di lentezza durato più di un anno, in un contesto come quello della Milano al tempo della Pandemia. Costruire in altezza non significa solo condensare la vita sociale e lavorativa, è uno sforzo di sintesi che ci impone di sposare l’essenziale, insediando attraverso l’edificio, un’immagine nella mente di chi vive la città. Sfruttando l’opportunità offerta dal progetto del Villaggio Olimpico per le Olimpiadi Invernali di Milano-Cortina 2026 è stato sviluppato il centro direzionale di Porta Romana, composto dalla nuova stazione ferroviaria e dalla coppia di torri ad uso terziario. Lo spazio che queste tre architetture generano è un luogo di aggregazione, di passaggio e di sosta che va ad interfacciarsi con una parte di Milano in rapido mutamento. Il contesto progettuale ci ha obbligati fin da subito a prendere una posizione nei confronti di una serie di vincoli che caratterizzano l’intorno, il limite della ferrovia, il rapporto con il parco e con la preesistente stazione. Il risultato è un’architettura che ordina gerarchicamente lo spazio che la circonda, che permette di misurare l’intorno, di guardare lontano. Le torri si confrontano su grandi distanze con gli altri elementi puntuali che disegnano lo skyline della città, portando con sé la responsabilità di identificare un luogo, quello dell’ex scalo di Porta Romana. Il disegno di volumi dall’assoluta sincerità strutturale vuole denunciare la precisa corrispondenza tra forma e struttura che è significato ultimo del nostro fare Architettura. Il progetto è stato indagato nelle sue componenti strutturali, tecnologiche, impiantistiche, economiche, energetiche ed ambientali. Il flusso di lavoro ci ha permesso di far dialogare queste discipline convogliando in un unico ambiente BIM le diverse competenze tecniche in modo da vivere in prima persona la nuova generazione di progettazione digitale. Se la costruzione è stata l’origine, l’Architettura la causa, la tesi è solo un pretesto per indagarle.
