The implementation of a damage tolerance design methodology for a component requires the application of fracture mechanics principles from a potentially critical crack detection perspective. The fatigue limits of the material with and without defects and the fatigue crack growth threshold for long cracks must be evaluated for the formulation of the complete model. The main purpose of the present thesis is to develop a reliable tool capable of rapidly predicting the fatigue limit of a nodular cast iron for different initial defect sizes and stress ratios. This can be achieved through the description of the cyclic R-curve and the estimate of the corresponding Kitagawa–Takahashi diagram in a damage tolerance design philosophy. The main advantages of this method compared to traditional time-consuming ones for the estimation of fatigue limit are the reduction of the number of tested specimens and the testing time. The method developed for this nodular cast iron can eventually be extended to other materials.

Abstract
The method developed for this nodular cast iron can eventually be extended to other materials.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
