Polo UNI.CO. Progetto e valorizzazione per un nuovo polo universitario nell'area dell'ex ospedale psichiatrico provinciale di Colorno (PR)

The thesis work focuses on the restoration and enhancement of the former Psychiatric Hospital of Colorno. The town is located 20km north of the city of Parma and It is characterized by the presence of the Ducal Palace dating back to the fourteenth century. If at first it was built as a defensive fort, later, with the advent of the Farnese family, it became the ducal residence and led to the urban development of the town; indeed, even today there are artifacts whose history is intertwined with the ducal one. Among these, we find the Convent of the Dominican Sisters and Friars, built in 1781 by the will of Ferdinando I Borbone of Parma, which subsequently became the first nucleus of the complex of the former Psychiatric Hospital (1873). As will be deduced from the historical investigations present in the first part of the research, the evolutionary process of the lot turns out to be very complex, consisting of additions, reuses, demolitions and technological adaptations resulting from the evolution of needs and activities that the company gradually had to face. The area, abandoned since the early 2000s, is now owned by the Province of Parma together with the Parma Hospital and it comprises of 12 buildings for a total of 20,984 square meters. It was chosen as the subject of the thesis for its strong historical value, the state of decay to which it is subject and the strategic position. The intention is to enhance the existing buildings through the inclusion of new functions compatible with the structural, plant and distribution aspects as well as the inclusion of new buildings, all aimed at the formation of a new university center aimed at students and citizens. and to the tourist circuits of the territory. Taking advantage of the artistic, tourist, food and wine potential of the Province of Parma and the presence of ALMA (international cooking school) hosted in the rooms of the Reggia, the new university center will be focused on food, by imagining a future in which Colorno represents a new centrality, attracting different and international personalities, (that are) linked to the world of food and research in this field.

Il lavoro di tesi si concentra sul recupero e la valorizzazione dell’ex Ospedale Psichiatrico di Colorno. Il comune situato 20 km a nord della città di Parma, si caratterizza per la presenza della Reggia Ducale risa-lente al XIV secolo. Se in un primo momento fu costruita come forte difensivo chiuso, successivamente, con l’avvento della famiglia Farnese, diventò residenza ducale e portò allo sviluppo urbanistico del paese; infatti, ancor oggi sono presenti manufatti la cui storia è intrecciata a quella ducale. Tra questi troviamo il Convento delle Suore e dei Frati Domenicani, costruito nel 1781 per volere di Ferdinando I Borbone di Parma e successivamente diventati il primo nucleo del complesso dell’ex Ospedale Psichiatrico (1873). Come si evincerà dalle indagini storiche presenti nella prima parte della ricerca il processo evolutivo del lotto risulta essere molto complesso, costituito da addizioni, riusi, demolizioni e adeguamenti tecnologici dettati dall’evolversi dei bisogni e delle attività che la società man mano doveva fronteggiare. L’area, abbandonata dai primi anni del Duemila, oggi è proprietà della Provincia di Parma e dell’Azienda Ospedaliera di Parma e comprende 12 edifici per un totale di 20.984 mq. Per il suo forte valore storico, lo stato di degrado a cui è soggetta e la posizione strategica è stata scelta come argomento di tesi. La volontà è quella di valorizzare i fabbricati esistenti attraverso l’inserimento di nuove funzioni compatibili con gli aspetti strutturali, impiantistici e distributivi oltre all’inserimento di nuovi fabbricati il tutto volto alla formazione di un nuovo polo universitario rivolto agli studenti, alla cittadinanza e ai circuiti turistici del territorio. Sfruttando le potenzialità artistiche, turistiche, enogastronomiche della Provincia di Parma e la presenza di ALMA (scuola internazionale di cucina) ospitata negli ambienti della Reggia, il nuovo polo universitario sarà incentrato sull’alimentazione, immaginando un futuro in cui Colorno rappresenta una nuova centralità attraendo personalità diverse e internazionali, legate al mondo del food e alla ricerca in questo campo.
