This thesis suggests a green solution aimed at power consumption reduction for data networks. The whole solution is based on an experimental research activity led in highly specialized laboratories of a well known IT infrastructures provider. Focusing on a core router used as a model, the results pointed out the energy profile of cooling system and line cards of the machine. This led to the definition of an algorithm able to reroute the traffic within an MPLS network to optimize the energy intake of each node, basing on its usage and number of line cards. In low loaded machines, the algorithm tries to empty links steering the traffic toward alternative routes so as to allow their hibernation with the consequent power savings. In highly loaded nodes the algorithm exploits the energy profile of the cooling system and through load balancing reduces the energy expense of the whole network due to machines' heating. Finally, the whole idea has been tested in a simulation which confirmed its effectiveness.

Abstract
Finally, the whole idea has been tested in a simulation which confirmed its effectiveness.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
