The purpose of this thesis is to study the main issues related to the maintenance of railway vehicles faced during the internship carried out at the Iseo plant of the Trenord company. On the base of this experience, the most interesting and critical aspects in the management and organization of the maintenance process were analyzed. The first investigation concerns the reasons behind the decision of the Lombardy Region to renew the rolling stock running on the Brescia – Iseo - Edolo line, according to a specific plan for the replacement of the trains. In order to confirm the validity of this decision, the historical series of faults suffered by the vehicles were analyzed using the "Data Driven Train Diagnostics" (D2TD) program produced by the Modelway company. Subsequently, the focus was put on the maintenance strategies existing today in the railway sector, on the advantages and disadvantages of each of them and on the tools and techniques necessary to implement them. From this theoretical research comes the thesis according to which Trenord could benefit from a renewal of its maintenance policy, moving from preventive maintenance, currently used, to predictive one. To support this assumption, experimental studies on predictive maintenance were presented and recent application cases of this strategy in the railway sector were described. Finally, the failures that occurred in recent years on Trenord's rolling stock were analyzed, again through the D2TD program. Thanks to this analysis, useful information and considerations were obtained in support of the thesis that predictive maintenance can be very convenient for a railway company like Trenord.
