Starting from a large-scale analysis of Piacenza’s area, the thesis is proposed as a design reflection on the theme of the transformation of Lusignani barracks in Piacenza. The analytical phase starts with historical and geographical research, to accurately investigate the intended uses and the areas of transformation with particular attention to those for former military use that today occupy a large part of the city fabric. Basically, we focused our attention on the Lusignani barracks located to the west of the Emilian capital. The new barracks layout includes both new buildings and modifications of the compositional and functional aspects of the old dormitories today intended to house protected residences for people with cognitive disabilities. As regards the new buildings, the design of a new exhibition complex consisting of a museum space and a botanical garden. The first is introverted and composed by different environments harmoniously distributed around a courtyard. The exhibition space welcomes reflections and insights on the theme of coexistence among man, agriculture and the environment, focusing on traditions and innovations of Piacenza’s culture. Consequently, architecture relates differently along the exhibition itinerary, reaching its peak in the tower element that allows you to observe the nearby crops and the Piacenza Apennines of the Trebbia Valley. The botanical garden, on the other hand, allows you to touch tradition and innovation in the agricultural field, especially in the cultivation of wheat. It consists of three greenhouses (mediterranean, arid and tropical), a vertical greenhouse that represents innovation in agriculture and two service volumes. All the different components of the project are analysed from a compositional, structural, technological and plant engineering point of view, evaluating the environmental profile of the materials used in addition to the utilization of BIM modelling.
