The opportunity to host the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games represents for the city of Milan an opportunity for growth in front of an international stage. The impact of a major event such as the Olympics brings with it numerous urban redevelopment and transformation interventions. One of the most representative of them involves the construction of the Olympic Village in the area of the former Porta Romana railway yard, which today represents a huge void within the Milan urban fabric and clearly separates two portions of the city. Through an in-depth analysis, we want to highlight the area’s potential and criticalities in order to understand the real needs to reflect on so that the project's outcome is effective and will constitute an added value for this part of the city. To do this, various design themes have been identified, which after careful processing, they have been translated into architectural solutions, starting from the large scale masterplan and the in-depth details. The Olympic Village project involves the construction of three macro–zones: an administrative and financial center interfacing through the “Olympic Square”; one area hosting athletes’ residences and collective services; one sector dedicated to sport activities. The thesis project explores the residential sector that will host the athletes in particular: the short duration of the event forces a reflection about the utilization of these spaces even after the events of the Olympics. For this reason, after an investigation on the university residence availability within the city of Milan was carried out, a solution was devised to easy enable adaptability towards this direction.
