The impact of big data on the planning and control cycle : a promising frontier or fashion effect ?

Big Data constitutes an emerging trend that has the potential to drive the fourth industrial revolution challenging actual best practices and managerial habits. The discontinuity brought by Big Data introduction is making the firm facing unexpected challenges. The goal of this research work is to investigate and understand if, to what extent and the reason why Big Data is applied on the Planning and Control cycle trying to understand whether it constitutes a promising frontier or if it represents an actual trend. Moreover, to better understand the adoption, it is necessary to analyze the main barriers and enabling factors. To pursue the scope, the thesis starts from an extensive investigation of the literature review concerning Big Data that allows to comprehend the potential usage in different fields on the Planning and Control cycle. Downstream of the study of the existing literature, an empirical analysis of thirteen case studies has been conducted. The objective is to understand the real dynamics concerning Big Data usage highlighting both the associated criticalities and the enabling factors. For each one of the phases related to the Planning and Control cycle, the impacts of Big Data are enlightened. Among the recurrent elements emerging from the analysis, it appears the capacity of analyzing the actual situation in real-time and the future-oriented analysis of the situations focalized on the capacity of analyzing the actual situation in real-time to support the company in planning and/or reviewing the actions to undertake in a more precise and accurate way, assuring greater flexibility and agility.

I Big Data costituiscono un fenomeno di tendenza che ha le potenzialità di guidare la quarta rivoluzione industriale mettendo in discussione le attuali pratiche aziendali e le abitudini manageriali. La discontinuità apportata dall’utilizzo dei Big Data nei processi aziendali sta ponendo le aziende di fronte a nuove e inaspettate sfide. Questa tesi di ricerca si pone l’obiettivo di indagare e comprendere se, in che misura e per quale motivo i Big Data siano utilizzati nell’abito del processo di Pianificazione e Controllo cercando di capire se costituiscano una promettente frontiera di sviluppo o se rappresentino più semplicemente una tendenza del momento. Per comprendere l’adozione, si vogliono inoltre analizzare le barriere e i fattori abilitanti. A tale scopo la tesi parte da un’ampia revisione della letteratura riguardante i Big Data che permette di capire in che modo vengano potenzialmente utilizzati in ambito di Pianificazione e Controllo. A valle dello studio della letteratura è stata condotta un’analisi empirica sulla base di tredici casi studio volti a comprendere le dinamiche reali di uso dei Big Data e a mettere in luce le criticità e i fattori abilitanti ad essi associati. Per ognuna delle fasi del ciclo di Pianificazione e Controllo vengono illustrati i principali impatti connessi all’uso dei Big Data. Alcuni elementi ricorrenti che emergono in modo particolare sono l’orientamento al futuro e la capacità di analizzare le situazioni attuali in tempo reale tali da supportare l’azienda nel pianificare e/o rivedere le azioni da intraprendere in modo più preciso e puntuale, garantendo una maggiore agilità e flessibilità.
