CHANCA has a very specific meaning in the Spanish language, since it is the place where all the tuna was produced. The typology of such mill represented a huge importance for all those countries on the coast facing the ocean, who had the possibility to implement the tuna industry and make of the said fish their main source of income. Zahara de los Atunes belongs to the reality mentioned above with its CHANCA, an artefact of great architectural and ethnological importance and case study of this whole thesis. The word CHANCA is the acronym that identifies the project theme: Centro Hispanico de Analisis Naturaleza Cetaceos y Ambiente. Specifically, in this place, where in the past tuna was fished and processed, it was inserted a new point of research and analysis for marine and terrestrial fauna. Such new activity had a crucial role for the completely abandoned mill, that starts getting a higher value thanks to the new functions, both for tourists and for the locals in need for collective and aggregation spaces. The compositional and design choices derive from the intention to preserve those specific characters that distinguish the Chanca. The historical wall, conceived as an enclosure, is actually the main focus of the whole project, since it represent at the same time the defensive component and the industrial one: this concept was the starting point for the design’s development. The large open space, characteristic of this kind of building, remains the same with a multifunctional purpose to host Spanish festivals and fairs. The proper buildings get their shape in the fenced area already infected by the fabric. Such new buildings define two patios, each one with a different connotation, one dedicated to the more touristic functions and the other one to services for Zahara de los Atunes’ inhabitants. At last, it was inserted a new pavilion dedicated to scientific research. The thesis work aims at creating one unique system involving the scientific, didactic and recreational field. Therefore, Zahara de los Atunes becomes a fixed reference point, not only in summer, but throughout the whole year.

Abstract
Therefore, Zahara de los Atunes becomes a fixed reference point, not only in summer, but throughout the whole year.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
