We consider an OSPF scenario in which we have exploited the SNMP protocol capabilities to obtain desired features. The results show that energy saving depends on the considered network and its load, allowing at best to achieve a saving higher than 40%.

Abstract
Since the early nineties, we can observe a constant growth of Internet utilization. Today, Internet is present in everyday life of a lot of people, becoming a needful working tool for many companies. This interest comes from the awareness that in the coming years the use of Internet will increase, making the ICT sector one of the most important consumer of energy resources. For this reason a great interest to limit energy consumption in this sector has been arising. In this work, we present a method which allows to set in sleeping mode the underutilized network devices and manage their awakening. The illustrated approach is of distributed type. Every network device performs an algorithm that allows the device to take decisions about its state, checking the network situation and maintaining the traffic demands routing feasible. We consider an OSPF scenario in which we have exploited the SNMP protocol capabilities to obtain desired features. The results show that energy saving depends on the considered network and its load, allowing at best to achieve a saving higher than 40%.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
