Streets are the structure upon which cities develop, and history has shown that they change their character, function and use over the years as they adapt to changes in mobility. Transforming the appearance of streets as we know them today, and turning them into places of social interaction and experience is fundamental. The streetscape is a complex system, that requires the interaction between several key components. Todor Alexandrov Boulevard pierces through the city center of Sofia, Bulgaria: originally following the path of the previously existing decumanus of the roman city Serdica, as the base of the urban tissue, then it transformed into a high-speed vehicular axis that divides the northern and southern parts of the city. The project aims at rethinking the public space along the boulevard by providing additional functions like lanes for bikes and other slow mobility vehicles, sport facilities, urban vegetable gardens and structures for leisure and recreation activities. The boulevard can be transformed into a connective rather than divisive tissue and provide a new dignity to the otherwise rundown socialist neighborhoods of the western parts of Sofia. The renovation of the public spaces indeed touches also the ground floors of the common low-income residential buildings, opening even more radical perspectives of change for the more peripheral areas of the city.

Abstract
The renovation of the public spaces indeed touches also the ground floors of the common low-income residential buildings, opening even more radical perspectives of change for the more peripheral areas of the city.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
