The research suggests that a focus on “dynamism” creates a better understanding of the relations between gentrification and the city. It aims to investigate the concept of gentrification dynamics within the consideration of city dynamics. There are three main phases of the investigation. Firstly it explores the theories about gentrification and city relation to creating knowledge that links the global and the local scale. It highlights that the gentrification phenomenon occurs in various forms and scales from the global north to the global south. Findings from the literature review suggest that cities with different socio-physical structures faced unique ways to achieve different gentrification outcomes. Thus, it needs to zoom out of the neighborhoods and have a wider prospect of the city scale to understand diversity and complexity in the gentrification dynamics. The second phase of the research is analyzing the urban context of Turkey, specifically the city of İstanbul. It helps clarify the long-debated relationship between city and gentrification by detailing the events that took place in four periods, which are the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and contemporary era. Within these chronological references, the research analyzes principal components of the transformation of urban space, urban planning visions, mega public investments, urban renewal projects, and mega capital investments occurred in the city. After several mapping contexts, overlapping gentrified areas, urban renewal areas, mega investment areas, transportation axes, industrial zones, financial activity areas, shopping malls, and touristic areas, two locations are selected since they both result to be potentially most suitable to answer the research question. The third phase of the dissertation explores heightened city dynamics in gentrification by examining the process in the two neighborhoods selected: Cihangir, Tarlabaşi. And it explores how these dynamics have differentially shaped the neighborhood’s social and physical features. It emphasizes a critical overview of gentrification by the investigation of four main city dynamics; politics, economy, culture, and architecture.

Abstract
It emphasizes a critical overview of gentrification by the investigation of four main city dynamics; politics, economy, culture, and architecture.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
