This thesis aims to study the effect on the global energy system of extraction ban of fossil fuels as an instrument for climate change mitigation. In the context of a multi-model research exercise, this thesis develops a new algorithm in WITCH, a leading Integrated Assessment Model, to allow for production ban of fossil fuels. Then, a series of novel scenarios are designed and analyzed to assess how supply side policies for climate change mitigation interact with the energy system, the international markets of fossil fuels and other kind of mitigation policies such as carbon pricing. Results suggests that supply side policies can substitute demand side policies until mid-century and show good complementarity with carbon pricing.

Abstract
This thesis aims to study the effect on the global energy system of extraction ban of fossil fuels as an instrument for climate change mitigation. In the context of a multi-model research exercise, this thesis develops a new algorithm in WITCH, a leading Integrated Assessment Model, to allow for production ban of fossil fuels. Then, a series of novel scenarios are designed and analyzed to assess how supply side policies for climate change mitigation interact with the energy system, the international markets of fossil fuels and other kind of mitigation policies such as carbon pricing. Results suggests that supply side policies can substitute demand side policies until mid-century and show good complementarity with carbon pricing.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
