The quarrying activity taking place in Carrara has given rise to fascinating landscapes, creating architectonic structures that express the strong connection between shape, matter and structure. The anthropic transformation of the landscape presents the artificial setting of the quarry as a new natural environment. The evocative scenery is profoundly inspiring, both from the point of view of space and perception, and from that of culture and history: the quarry evolves beyond its physical, geological, technical and economic function, beyond its testament to the devastation inflicted on the environment in the past, to become a symbol of the local and national culture. This work takes on a new point of view on the irreversibility of quarrying in a landscape. It recognises a new state of the environment and landscape, where the architectural project can be laid down with the intent of increasing the cultural value of the location even further. The project aims at creating a virtuous bond between a territory where the quarrying activity will continue for several years, and the surrounding environment. Our main objective is to encompass the daily quarrying activity into the wider perspective of the environment and cultural significance, where the quarry stops being seen as an “open wound” in the mountain side, and becomes the subject of architectonic study and experimentation, generating new opportunities of valorisation of the territory.

Abstract
Our main objective is to encompass the daily quarrying activity into the wider perspective of the environment and cultural significance, where the quarry stops being seen as an “open wound” in the mountain side, and becomes the subject of architectonic study and experimentation, generating new opportunities of valorisation of the territory.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
