The School of Ballet at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana has a colourful and revolutionary story to its existence: with renowned architects, dramatic political associations, decades of neglect, and recent “acts of god”, it arrives in the 21st Century, battered and bruised yet it remains an exceptional example of Cuban Modernism and an important symbol of 20th Century social upheaval. In this regard, it has become a concern for many architects around the globe who worry about its future plight in relation to serious challenges, including the imminent risk of widespread and reoccuring flooding. This currently presents the greatest challenge to the ongoing conservation efforts as the frequency and severity of rising water levels are only expected to worsen due to climate change and further urbanisation of the River Quibu catchment area. In response, we develop a series of restoration and defence works which may be applied temporarily to protect the School of Ballet in its current condition and permanent works intended to be integrated into the overarching Conservation Management Plan, developed by the Keeping ISA Modern team, a group of architects and engineers committed to the conservation of the National Art Schools in conjunction with Vittorio Garatti and the Cuban Ministry of Culture. It is from this group that a significant portion of our research sources have been acquired. Including, simulated flood scenarios for both existing and proposed conditions.
