La giostra si vive tutto l'anno. Una traccia permanente della festa medievale di Arezzo

The thesis investigates the theme of public space, taking an excursus of what it has been throughout history, with the intention of looking at its origins to understand why it was created and to catch what it has brought inside the city and in the way humans act. The investigation focused on human practices, urban rituals and how public space accommodates the way humans are and act in space: how space is influenced by humans and how humans influence space. In particular, we examined the historical city of Arezzo starting from the observation of the life of its public spaces, outlining the connections, relationships and exchanges between them within the city walls, in relation to the Giostra del Saracino, an ancient knightly tournament that has its origin in the Middle Ages. Raced twice a year in the heart of the city, it reveals new scenarios and affects Arezzo’s public space, introducing new dynamics and social relations between citizens and new relationships between public spaces: for this reason it makes sense to extend the values, atmospheres and experiences of the Joust to the whole year to enhance and restore meaning to public space. The project, which takes the form of furnishing elements in urban interiors, attempts to fit into the contemporary world through its language of the ephemeral and temporary, while maintaining the intention of lasting through time, as permanent traces of the life and identity of the people that are expressed during the Giostra.

La tesi prende in esame il tema dello spazio pubblico, facendo un excursus di quello che è stato nella storia con l’intento di guardare alle sue origini, per comprenderne i motivi della generazione e per cogliere cosa esso ha fatto nascere nella città e nel modo di agire dell’uomo. L’indagine si è concentrata sulle pratiche umane, sui riti urbani e su come lo spazio pubblico accoglie il modo in cui l’uomo è e agisce nello spazio: in sintesi, come lo spazio è influenzato dall’uomo e come l’uomo influenza lo spazio. In particolare, si è preso in esame la città storica di Arezzo partendo dall’osservazione della vita dei suoi spazi pubblici, delineandone le connessioni, i rapporti e gli scambi che intercorrono fra di essi all’interno delle mura cittadine, in relazione alla Giostra del Saracino, un antico torneo cavalleresco che ha le proprie radici nel Medioevo. Corsa due volte l’anno nel cuore della città, essa svela nuovi scenari e incide all’interno dello spazio pubblico aretino introducendo nuove dinamiche e rapporti sociali tra i cittadini e nuove relazioni tra gli spazi pubblici: per questo ha senso estendere i valori, le atmosfere e le esperienze della Giostra a tutto l’anno per valorizzare e restituire significato allo spazio pubblico. Il progetto, che si concretizza con elementi d’arredo negli interni urbani, tenta di inserirsi nella contemporaneità attraverso il suo linguaggio dell’effimero e del temporaneo, mantenendo l’intento di durare nel tempo, come tracce più durature di quella vita e identità di popolo che si esprimono durante la Giostra.
