This thesis reflects on the fragility, complexity and contradiction of a strongly anthropized area, characterized by an inaccessible reality that can potentially be developed as a renewed landscape. The area examined is a part of the Olona Valley, in the interval covered by the first section of the Valmorea’s Railway, between Castellanza and Cairate Lonate-Ceppino. This place has a long industrial history as it has hosted paper mills, factories and cotton mills settled in the river valley, in order to take advantage of the water and the driving force of the river. Technological development, de-industrialization processes and market globalization have led to the progressive deseration of these activities, leaving a landscape of waste; Olona Valley witnesses the river area history, that has been strongly anthropized and abused over the last decades. The aim of the thesis is therefore to describe, read and treat, through the project, this complex reality, implementing strategies of consolidation, protection and re-naturalization of the valley area. This purpose will be achieved through an environmental reconnection plan extended on a territorial scale and actions carried out on a local scale. The thesis present the architectural project as a "space therapy" that takes into consideration the need to modify the landscape as a form of care, concretized starting from the recognition, unveiling or anticipation of new forms of relationship. As a result the project becomes an expression of relating to natural diversity in a conscious way; acknowledging the soil as a fundamental environmental infrastructure aiming to free it rather than occupy it, paying attention to measuring every action starting from the need to identify as integral part of the landscape. The thesis offers a general strategic response for a transept and some sections of the Olona Valley, focusing more closely on Castellanza. In this context, the aim of the intervetion is to reconnect the valley area to the local ecological network, through partial re-naturalization of the river bed, the design of soils, infrastructures and artifacts. Furthermore, also the reconversion of the thermoelectric plant in a hydroponic study center for agricultural production and sperimentation, rapresent a project intent.
