Le volte del Duomo di Milano. Storia, geometria, materiali

The Duomo of Milan is a building steeped in history and has countless historiographic sources from which to draw information. I therefore chose to focus my thesis on the Duomo following my internship at the Office of Cultural Heritage for the Archdiocese of Milan, which allowed me to come into contact with the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo several times, discovering its history and current works; the choice to focus on the vaults derives from the fact that there is not yet an in-depth study of their construction and development over the centuries. This work of mine wants to be an introduction to the vaulted system of the Duomo and tries to group together the main documents, to trace a history of it and finally to compare the design data with the current surveys. In this thesis we have tried, starting from a general overview of the building, to analyze the vaulted system of the building, trying to study its origins, construction, structure, materials and restoration. The vaulted system of the Duomo is very particular, since it is characterized by the structure of the double vaults: the cross vaults present on the intrados of the Duomo are covered on the extrados by barrel vaults, very low, which run transversally to the naves; the system of the double vaults creates a row of chambers along the whole nave, called sordine. The same scheme is used in the transept, the choir and the apse. This particular construction system has no precedent and was, therefore, the reason for study and work for this thesis.

Il Duomo di Milano è un edificio intriso di storia e possiede innumerevoli fonti storiografiche da cui trarre le informazioni. Ho pertanto scelto di focalizzare la mia tesi sul Duomo in seguito al mio periodo di tirocinio all’interno dell’Ufficio dei Beni Culturali per l’Arcidiocesi di Milano, che mi ha permesso di entrare più volte in contatto con la Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, scoprendone la storia e i lavori attuali; la scelta di focalizzarmi sulle volte deriva dal fatto che non è ancora presente uno studio approfondito sulla loro costruzione e il loro sviluppo nei secoli. Questo mio lavoro vuole essere un’introduzione al sistema voltato del Duomo e cerca di raggruppare i principali documenti, per tracciarne una storia ed infine per confrontarne i dati progettuali con i rilievi attuali. In questa tesi si è cercato, partendo da un’inquadratura generale dell’edificio, di analizzare il sistema voltato dell’edificio, provando a studiarne le origini, la costruzione, la struttura, i materiali e il restauro. Il sistema voltato del Duomo è molto particolare, poiché è caratterizzato dalla struttura delle doppie volte: le volte a crociera presenti all’intradosso del Duomo sono ricoperte all’estradosso mediante volte a botte, molto ribassate, che corrono trasversalmente alle navate; il sistema delle doppie volte crea una fila di camere lungo tutta la navata, chiamate sordine. Lo stesso schema è utilizzato nel transetto, nel coro e nell’abside. Questo sistema costruttivo particolare non ha precedenti ed è stato, quindi, motivo di studio e di lavoro per questa tesi.
