The ongoing trend of integrating Lean Manufacturing (LM) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) has been studied as it is promising to solve the limitations and future challenges in manufacturing while adding value to products and services. The integration of these two approaches is known as Lean 4.0 that at the same time requires the LM philosophy that aims at perfection and the adoption of the modern I4.0 technologies. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of research in the presented field. Therefore, a systematic literature review methodology has been adopted for the identification, selection, and evaluation of the published research. A set of 148 papers deducted from the most relevant search engines, from 2011 to 2020, has been analyzed and synthesized. First, a bibliometric analysis was conducted, in which the most cited papers, the most cited authors, most used keywords, collaborations between authors, among other trends were identified. Then, a literature analysis was carried out, and on it, the analysis of these papers enabled to: (1) identify three distinctive levels of integration between LM and I4.0; (2) describe benefits resulting from the integration of both domains; and (3) propose a roadmap to achieve the targeted benefits. The paper continues to discuss the future research directions found in the literature and a series of implications are presented that are intended to be useful from an academic point of view for future research.
Il trend attuale riguardante l’integrazione di Lean Management (LM) e Industry 4.0 (I4.0) è stato studiato in quanto promette di risolvere i limiti e le sfide future nella produzione aggiungendo valore a prodotti e servizi. L'integrazione di questi due approcci è nota come Lean 4.0: essa richiede allo stesso tempo la filosofia LM che punta alla perfezione e l'adozione delle moderne tecnologie I4.0. Lo scopo di questo documento è fornire una panoramica dello stato attuale della ricerca nel campo presentato. Pertanto, una metodologia di revisione sistematica della letteratura è stata utilizzata per l'identificazione, la selezione e la valutazione della ricerca pubblicata. È stato analizzato e sintetizzato un insieme di 148 articoli scaricati dai motori di ricerca più rilevanti, dal 2011 al 2020. Quindi, è stata condotta un'analisi bibliometrica in cui sono stati identificati i documenti più citati, gli autori più citati, le parole chiave più utilizzate, le collaborazioni tra autori e altre tendenze in atto. Poi, è stata effettuata un'analisi della letteratura che ha permesso di: (1) classificare tre livelli di integrazione tra LM e I4.0; (2) descrivere vantaggi come risultati dell'integrazione di entrambi i domini; e (3) proporre un roadmap per ottenere i benefici. L'articolo continua a discutere le direzioni di ricerca future trovate in letteratura e vengono presentate una serie di implicazioni che si intendono utili da un punto di vista accademico per la ricerca futura.
