One of the biggest and most ambitious projects in history is the one of the new-born Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The BRI aims at revolutionizing international trade and how global supply chains are connected, but it is an on-going project that still deserves to be adequately explored. To investigate how modern supply chains are leveraging evolution and development of the BRI, it was taken the perspective of a consolidator, that is a specific player along the chain focused on arranging the import and export of goods by rail along the BRI. In more detail, this study aimed at analyzing how supply chains are arranged along the BRI corridors and how the involved firms could take advantage or suffer from BRI’s development. Drawbacks and opportunities related to the BRI were first illustrated and analyzed leveraging in-depth case research. A single case study was conducted by involving an Italian company acting as consolidator in the import operations from China to Europe. Moreover, the case study also examined the Covid-19 pandemic impacts that deeply affected supply chain processes and activities in the timeframe between August 2020 and January 2021. Findings showed how Covid-19 pandemic worsened the identified supply chain drawbacks and how the emergency was handled along the considered supply chain. Data analysis allowed to trace a path for addressing the current BRI’s criticalities. It also provided some suggestions that could be useful in the next future to prepare for, or react to, and recover from forecasted or unforeseen events as the pandemic. Therefore, this study could pave the way for examining the considered issues also in other contexts related to the BRI and for studying how global supply chain collaborates and develops based on the business environment surrounding firms.

Abstract
Therefore, this study could pave the way for examining the considered issues also in other contexts related to the BRI and for studying how global supply chain collaborates and develops based on the business environment surrounding firms.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
