Breakthrough technologies could be exploited by firms in different ways and usually brings to the development of emerging industries, in which companies could reach meaningful results by achieving competitive advantages against competitors. This is true only if those enterprises are able to design and adopt efficient and effective business models. The role of business model in emerging industries could be more important than those in mature ones since it could bring companies to be successful and to strengthen their position within the industry. This is the case of the emerging industry of Drones, in which an increasing number of companies is entering, in order to benefit from the potentiality of this new technology, innovate their own business and to gain competitiveness and success against competitors. The purpose of this Master Thesis is to investigate the business models adopted by firms in the emerging industry of Drones. Therefore, we have submitted a Survey to the firms operating in the Italian market. We have then applied a cluster analysis to identify 6 business models that differ for vertical integration, specialization, strategic partners, geographical scope and the use of data analysis techniques. This Master Thesis, contributes to research of the Drone Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, by updating the existing ecosystem previously identified and analyzing which business models are developing within this new industry and which of them could allow companies to grow in the future.
