The city is made up of different materials and it is constantly crossed by a multitude of flows like water, energies, goods, people, data, etc. It is essential to integrate people as the main resource in territorial development. The way that cities are designed and managed affects peoples’ health and wellbeing in many ways. Today’s biggest challenges such as the climate crisis and widening inequalities require a fundamental shift in understandings of healthy urbanism – including policies and decisions that shape neighbourhood and building design. We need a shared understanding of the meaning and form of healthy urban environments to plan cities that support population health, now and into the future. This work focuses on “Healthy Urbanism” as a new paradigm, in which new kinds of synergies can be considered in a contemporary way. The initial work in this thesis elaborates the concept of health and healthy cities by doing research and casework to generate new ideas and a design toolkit, which later helps to do a specific investigation on the context of Amsterdam. The City of Amsterdam is currently developing its Environmental Vision, which describes how the city will develop until 2050. This development will promote new centres for healthy and ecological urban development in/ around Amsterdam. In the coming thirty years the centre of gravity will shift from ‘City-Expansion’ towards the south of the city, strategically in the middle of the economic zone between Schiphol and the Bijlmer and the centre. By the existing characteristics of the area’s new lake, infrastructure, and miscellaneous program available for use, a lively piece of city for Amsterdam will be created in 2050. After the initial investigations and understanding of the specifics of the Amsterdam south location, three different strategies related to connecting landscapes, connecting and developing nearby green, and adding new future densities were developed. Followed by these strategies, different transects were developed that highlights some of the main issues of each location and providing integrative solutions and future visions. At the end of the work, a general toolkit of design solutions is produced, which can have far-reaching implications. This can be a reference (starting point) to any future research/ design based queries. This work on Shaping Cities - Shaping People provides a great opportunity to think and develop new planning and design processes based on a Healthy Urbanism approach for promoting and building a new form of healthy communities of the future.
La città è composta da materiali diversi ed è costantemente attraversata da una moltitudine di flussi come l’acqua, le energie, le merci, le persone, i dati, ecc. È fondamentale integrare le persone come risorsa principale nello sviluppo territoriale. Il modo in cui le città sono progettate e gestite influisce sulla salute e sul benessere delle persone in molti modi. Le maggiori sfide odierne come la crisi climatica e le disuguaglianze in aumento richiedono un cambiamento fondamentale nella comprensione di un’urbanistica sana, comprese le politiche e le decisioni che modellano il quartiere e la progettazione degli edifici. Abbiamo bisogno di una comprensione condivisa del significato e della forma di ambienti urbani sani per pianificare città che supportano la salute della popolazione, ora e in futuro. Questo lavoro si concentra su “Healthy Urbanism” come nuovo paradigma, in cui nuovi tipi di sinergie possono essere considerati in modo contemporaneo. In base alle caratteristiche esistenti del nuovo lago della zona, delle infrastrutture e del programma urbano misto, nel 2050 verrà creato un nuovo e vibrante pezzo di città. Dopo le indagini iniziali e la comprensione delle specificità Amsterdam sud, sono state sviluppate tre diverse strategie relative al collegamento dei paesaggi, al collegamento e allo sviluppo del verde di vicinato e all’aggiunta di nuove densità urbane. Seguendo queste strategie, sono stati sviluppati diversi transetti che evidenziano alcune delle principali problematiche di ciascuna località e forniscono soluzioni integrate.
