Fundamentals of Mantova

This thesis constitutes the final result of the Master of Science in Architectural Design and History in Politecnico di Milano. If it had to be classified, it would probably be a typological-representation thesis, because it is centered both around topics concerning the study of morphology and of the urban environment, and the representation style that has been used to convey these topics; in conclusion the thesis is neither an architectural design nor a written essay. The title Fundamentals of Mantova points at the central role of architectural elements in this work, similarly to what happens in Elements of Venice by Giulia Foscari, a book that has been considered as main source of inspiration. In the thesis are listed, almost like in a catalogue, the most recurrently found architectural elements of the town of Mantova, or the ones that contribute to define its character and image. Each of these elements is considered not only from the architectural point of view, but also from the side of art history ad general perception of the town. The quickest and most effective mean to represent the mentioned topics is that of free-hand drawing, most frequently found in the thesis, and that of graphic re-elaboration via image editing programs and collages, starting from photos or pre-existing drawings; in a process similar to the one used in the first phases of an architecture design studio. Each chapter of the written thesis corresponds to a single panel presented at the exam, this way each sheet represents just one Fundamental and is independent from the others. After a necessary introduction to the particular local MORPHOLOGY, focused on waters and traces, the so called Fundamentals are: FAÇADES, IRREGULAR FAÇADES, MANTUAN HOUSES, PORCHES, COURTAYRDS, PATHS, VAULTS AND DOMES, VERTICAL ELEMENTS, OPEN SPACES. To conclude, a panel abut COMPOSITION which, by taking inspiration from the rich mantuan past, it is a reflection about how the modern architect can operate in a historical context.

Questo lavoro di tesi costituisce la conclusione del Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Architectural Design and History, presso il Politecnico di Milano. Volendo trovare una classificazione, la si potrebbe definire una tesi tipologico-rappresentativa, perché al suo interno hanno pari importanza argomenti attinenti alla morfologia ed allo studio tipologico dell’ambiente urbano, e lo stile di rappresentazione con cui questi concetti sono stati espressi; non si tratta quindi né di un progetto architettonico né di un lavoro di una ricerca scritta. Il titolo Fundamentals of Mantova indica la centralità degli elementi architettonici all’interno di quest’opera, similmente a quanto avviene in Elements of Venice di Giulia Foscari, libro che è stato fonte d’ispirazione di questo lavoro. Nella tesi vengono elencati, quasi come in un catalogo, gli elementi architettonici che si incontrano più spesso nella città di Mantova, o che comunque sono serviti a definire il suo carattere e la sua immagine. Ognuno di questi elementi viene considerato da un punto di vista non strettamente architettonico, ma aperto, per esempio, alla storia dell’arte o alla percezione della città. Il mezzo più rapido ed efficace per veicolare gli argomenti trattati è quello del disegno a mano libera, che ricorre maggiormente nella tesi, e della rielaborazione grafica tramite programmi di fotoritocco o collage, a partire da fotografie o disegni preesistenti; in un modo simile a quello impiegato durante le prime fasi di progettazione di un edificio. Ogni capitolo della tesi scritta corrisponde ad una tavola presentata all’esame, in tal modo ogni tavola presenta un singolo Fundamental ed è quindi autonoma rispetto alle altre. Dopo una necessaria introduzione alla particolare MORFOLOGIA locale, con attenzione alle acque ed ai tracciati, I Fundamentals così definiti sono: FACCIATE, FACCIATE IRREGOLARI, CASE MANTOVANE, PORTICI, CORTI, PERCORSI, VOLTE E CUPOLE, ELEMENTI VERTICALI, SPAZI APERTI. Per finire, una tavola di COMPOSIZIONE la quale, traendo spunto dal ricco passato mantovano, è una riflessione sul metodo in cui l’architetto può operare in un contesto storico.
