Nowadays, companies are increasingly exposed to the features and changes affecting the markets in which they operate: in this ever-changing environment, an important added value for companies is their ability to act proactively, transforming external events into opportunities for growth. The following thesis analyzes the case of a company operating in the railway sector according to an Engineering to Order approach, which, after a period of growth and expansion and the consequent change of the market in which it operates, aims to improve its On-time delivery performance. The purpose of this study is to analyze company’s On-time delivery performance and identify the best solution to improve it, understanding which tools could provide support in this path. In addition, the thesis aims to analyze with a didactic intent RStudio, an environment usually adopted for statistical computing but that could provide a valuable support for planning. The approach adopted to achieve these objectives has as its starting point the analysis of the literature, combined with an activity of detailed observation of the production process and a qualitative analysis on the causes determining the delayed delivery of the products. Results identify in a finite capacity scheduling engine the ideal tool to synchronize the phases of the production process and to increase the visibility on it, optimizing production sequence and improving the On-time delivery performance of the company and consequently the level of service offered to customers. Finally, on the basis of these findings, a simulation algorithm is developed with RStudio, aimed at understanding and defining the objective function, logics and constraints that will have to be implemented on the scheduling tool. In addition, the algorithm returns a series of Key Performance Indicators related to the proposed schedule, constituting the starting point to develop some “what-if” and multi-scenery analysis. Results evidence how company's performance can be improved by a more synchronized management of production phases and a more structured approach in addressing planning and production activities. Moreover, the findings related to the development of the algorithm are the proof of validity of RStudio as a tool able to support production planning.

Abstract
Moreover, the findings related to the development of the algorithm are the proof of validity of RStudio as a tool able to support production planning.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
