The integration between lean production and Industry 4.0 : a longitudinal study and synergistic effects evaluation on manufacturing companies

This research is focused on the integration between Lean Production and Industry 4.0, considered by many researchers and practitioners as the two most used industrial paradigms by manufacturing companies. However, few studies have investigated empirically and quantitatively the relationships between the two realms and operational performances. Consequently, the research approach adopted in this dissertation firstly includes a cross-sectional survey on manufacturing firms useful to perform a longitudinal study (2018-2021). It aims to look at the evolution of Lean Production and Industry 4.0 association over the years and their impact on performance using contingency tables. Secondly, data were used to execute a multiple hierarchical regression analysis to discover the quantitative and empirical synergies between the specific practices and technologies of the two realms impacting on performances. While simultaneously controlling the effect of company size, lengths of Lean Production and Industry 4.0 implementation, five different regression models were tested to study the effects on performances of the two aspects alone and in conjunction. The findings from this research provide evidence that Lean Production has reached a substantial saturation in recent years not being capable anymore of impacting on firms’ performances in isolation. On the other hand, Industry 4.0 has undergone a major development in the last few years, becoming a widely used industrial paradigm that increase firms’ performances. Considering the interactions between Lean factors and the specific digital technologies, some peculiar synergies were found. They occur when the aggregate value on performance, resulting from the joint application of Lean Production practices and Industry 4.0 technologies, is higher than the sum of the values obtained by their individual application. These findings provide both theoretical and practical insights into how Lean Manufacturing and Industry 4.0 affect the performance of manufacturing firms. Therefore, Lean Production is not obsolete but needs to be integrated synergistically with specific digital technologies to make firms achieve superior performances.

Questa ricerca si focalizza sull'integrazione tra Lean Production e Industria 4.0, considerati da molti ricercatori e professionisti come i due paradigmi industriali più utilizzati dalle aziende manifatturiere. Tuttavia, pochi studi hanno indagato empiricamente e quantitativamente le relazioni tra i due aspetti e le performance operative. L'approccio di ricerca adottato include in primo luogo un'indagine trasversale sulle aziende manifatturiere utile per eseguire uno studio longitudinale (2018-2021). L'obiettivo è quello di esaminare l'evoluzione dell'associazione Lean Production e Industria 4.0 nel corso degli anni e il loro impatto sulle performance utilizzando tabelle di contingenza. In secondo luogo, è stata eseguita una regressione gerarchica multipla per scoprire le sinergie quantitative ed empiriche tra le pratiche e le tecnologie specifiche dei due approcci che hanno un impatto sulle performance. Controllando l'effetto delle dimensioni d'azienda, la durata d’implementazione Lean e quella di Industria 4.0, sono stati testati cinque diversi modelli di regressione per studiare gli effetti sulle performance dei due aspetti da soli e in combinazione. I risultati di questa ricerca provano che la Lean Production ha raggiunto la saturazione negli ultimi anni e che non è più in grado di avere un impatto sulle performance aziendali da sola. Al contrario, l'Industria 4.0 ha subito un grande sviluppo, diventando un paradigma industriale ampiamente utilizzato per aumentare le prestazioni delle aziende. Inoltre, sono state trovate alcune sinergie specifiche tra fattori Lean e tecnologie digitali. Esse si verificano quando il valore aggregato sulla performance, risultante dall'applicazione congiunta di pratiche Lean e tecnologie digitali, è superiore alla somma dei valori ottenuti dalla loro applicazione individuale. Questi risultati forniscono spunti sia teorici che pratici su come la Lean Manufacturing e l'Industria 4.0 influenzano le performance delle aziende manifatturiere. Pertanto, la Lean Production non è obsoleta, ma necessita di essere integrata sinergicamente con specifiche tecnologie digitali affinché le aziende raggiungano performance migliori.
