The architecture of the small things

Far from being a discipline that attempts an organic perception of the world, urban planning drastically reduces the human experience to a narrow selection of basic functions and leaves, then, other unrelated figures to fill the gaps, to bridge the physical impossibility of a paper grid with that multitude of experiences that moulded cities and civilizations for millennia. In other words: the bigger the scale considered, the further the poetry. In this framework, architecture has always expressed through the centuries its most holistic visions through paintings and sketches because, once free from the limiting canons and regulations of the discipline, can really express to the fullest extent the spirit of its time. For this reason, architecture should first be a product of the entire pool of sensory experiences, well before being even a first draft of a project on paper, for it to be able to really make an impact of whatsoever scale. Using six of Calvino’s very own Invisible Cities as starting point, this volume contains the experience of a traveller going through six different places in far-away lands, located in a not-so-far-away future and inspired by very real places of today’s world.

Lungi dall’essere una disciplina in grado di attuare una comprensione olistica del mondo, l’urbanistica riduce drasticamente le esperienze umane ad una manciata di funzioni stereotipate e lascia poi a figure terze il compito di colmare i vuoti che passano tra la metafisica di una griglia su carta e l’incredibile varietà delle esperienze umane che hanno plasmato civiltà e nazioni per millenni. In altre parole, più grande è la scala, più distante la poesia. In questo contesto l’architettura ha sempre avuto modo di esprimersi piu’ profondamente e completamente attraverso dipinti e schizzi perché’, una volta liberata dai vincoli della disciplina dovuti a regole e leggi, siano esse fisiche o umane, ha la possibilità di esprimere al meglio lo spirito del proprio tempo. Per questa ragione ritengo che l’architettura debba essere un risultato dipendente dall’intero pool di esperienze sensoriali umane ben prima di tracciare anche solo la prima linea su un pezzo di carta, per accertarsi che il progetto possa avere un qualche tipo di impatto. Utilizzando sei città invisibili di Calvino come base, questo volume contiene le esperienze di un viaggiatore attraverso sei diverse città di terre lontane, in un futuro non troppo distante dal nostro, e ispirate a posti e situazioni assolutamente reali e riconoscibili nel nostro panorama odierno.
