Over the past decades, globalization in food trade has been correlated with an increasing importance to sustainability of products and production practices. Therefore, certification of food products is a raising trend which is expected to be an effective mechanism for connecting producers in developing countries to markets in developed countries while promoting environmental-friendly and socially fair production and trade. This study investigates the characteristics of certification systems in food commodities, the benefits and barriers to adopt such systems in the eye of different supply chain players, and the factors influencing their impact. The methodology of this thesis consists of two parts. Firstly, a systematic literature review is conducted according to the references obtained from the online database of Scopus. Then, it is supplemented with the review of four international organizations that provide certification systems for food products: Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, GlobalGAP, and IFOAM-Organics. Results suggest that even though their benefits are promising and cannot be ignored, certification systems are not enough for complete transition towards sustainability. Based on the main findings in the literature and the information gathered from certifier organizations, frameworks are proposed and conclusions are drawn. The contribution of this study to literature is important since it introduces a general view to the concept of certifications by integrating several dimensions (food commodity, supply chain actor, location, certifier organization etc.).

Abstract
Over the past decades, globalization in food trade has been correlated with an increasing importance to sustainability of products and production practices. Therefore, certification of food products is a raising trend which is expected to be an effective mechanism for connecting producers in developing countries to markets in developed countries while promoting environmental-friendly and socially fair production and trade.
