Sul limite fra città e urbanizzazione. La relazione fra oggetto urbano e ensemble

The city is the place where the different scales of architecture and the urban dimension relate. There are moments in the urban fabric in which the shape of the various parts that compose it and the way in which they relate become more evident. In these places the relationship between the shape of the building and the urban one is so strong that the two entities almost coincide. The search for formal accuracy thus becomes the essential tool through which the urban object relates to the context. The position of this object in the city, the formal theme, and the low monumentality character make it the protagonist and at the same time part of a more complex whole. It is precisely in this sum of characteristics and in the dialectical relationship that it maintains between a smaller scale and a larger one that the urban building, despite being a circumscribed fact, can take on the value of an entire part of the city. This thesis investigates the possibility of generating urbanity starting from an architectural form, assuming the area defined on the western edge of the Beruto plan as a project site. The area around Via Washington is a borderline case between urbanity and urbanization: the principles on which it is based are those of the logical and necessary organization of its parts, rather than those of an idea of the city. This is a paradigmatic place in the contemporary city: an urban area with specific characters, but at the same time very homogeneous from a typological, functional and social point of view. The project therefore proposes to insert two urban buildings that are able to clarify a place where even the positive-characterizing value of its homogeneity risks being lost in the weak and generic.

La città è il luogo in cui si relazionano le diverse scale dell’architettura e della dimensione urbana. Ci sono dei momenti nel tessuto urbano in cui la forma delle varie parti che lo compongono ed il modo in cui si relazionano si rendono più evidenti. In questi luoghi il rapporto fra la forma dell’edificio e quella urbana è così forte che le due entità vengono quasi a coincidere. La ricerca di accuratezza formale diventa quindi lo strumento essenziale attraverso cui l’oggetto urbano si rapporta con il contesto. La posizione di questo oggetto nella città, il tema formale, ed il carattere di bassa monumentalità lo rendono protagonista e allo stesso tempo parte di un intero più complesso. È proprio in questa somma di caratteristiche e nel rapporto dialettico che mantiene fra una scala più minuta ed una più ampia che l’edificio urbano, pur essendo un fatto circoscritto, può assumere il valore di un’intera parte di città. Questa tesi indaga la possibilità di generare urbanità a partire da una forma architettonica, assumendo l’area definitasi sul margine Ovest del piano Beruto come luogo di progetto. L’area intorno a via Washington si tratta infatti di un caso limite fra urbanità e urbanizzazione: i principi su cui si basa sono quelli dell’organizzazione logica e necessaria delle sue parti, più che quelli di un’idea di città. Questo è un luogo paradigmatico nella città contemporanea: un’area urbana dai caratteri specifici, ma contemporaneamente molto omogenea dal punto di vista tipologico, funzionale e sociale. Il progetto propone quindi di inserire due edifici urbani che siano in grado di chiarificare un luogo in cui anche il valore positivo-caratterizzante della sua omogeneità rischia di perdersi nel debole e nel generico.
