The urban garden

The convitto is a office building located in the South-West corner of the Umanitaria block that is built after WWII, originally to serve as the student housing. Because it is influenced by the industrial architectural movement, throught the whole block it is adding a great historical contribution by its authentic layers. Throught the whole umanitara it can visibly be seen that the historical textures take a great impact in terms of each building reflecting of its time’s architectural movement therefore giving the area the perspective for it’s ’’layers of history’’. By this project it is aimed to transform the convitto building to it’s original purpose of ‘student housing’ by a modern day addition. Because of it’s important role on the site understanding its weaknesses and turning them into opportunities took great imprtance in terms of exploring the needs of the future inhabitans while preserving the area’s historical and physical texture . Therefore this intervention is dedicated firstly to protect and secondly on addapting into its couse. The first proposal on the site it is aimed to open its blockage from the rest of the block by expanding the green spaces which lost it’s meaning due to the privacy of the current garden. Later on elevation of the corner for it’s future residents and possible gains of new viewpoints to increase the market value, considering it is located in a calm enviroment within the cross roads of the Via Fanti and Via Daverio it provides great purpose to be a residential building on the soutwest corner. By this approach it is generated an appealing area for the public which serves to the northeast part of the block by being a quiet outer residential shell and interractive inner space for the users of the umanitaria where they can engage with the community as well as taking part in various activities. Regardless of the new structure designed to be reflecting fragments of today’s modern architecture, the existing Convitto’s structure preserved fully except some small opennings for the connection points throught the new addition building. In terms of the identity new additions reflects similarities on volumes yet distinctions on the texture preserving the Convitto’s identity and improving it’s character respecting not only convittos historical importance but the whole area.

Il convitto è un edificio per uffici situato nell'angolo sud-ovest dell'isolato Umanitaria, costruito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, originariamente per servire come alloggio per studenti. Poiché è influenzato dal movimento dell'architettura industriale, attraverso l'intero blocco sta aggiungendo un grande contributo storico dai suoi strati autentici. Attraverso l'intera umanitara si può visibilmente vedere che le trame storiche assumono un grande impatto in termini di ogni edificio riflettendo il movimento architettonico del suo tempo, dando quindi all'area la prospettiva per i suoi "strati di storia". Da questo progetto ha lo scopo di trasformare l'edificio convitto al suo scopo originale di "alloggi per studenti" con un'aggiunta moderna. Per colpa di è un ruolo importante nel sito, comprenderne i punti deboli e trasformarli in opportunità ha avuto una grande importanza in termini di esplorare le esigenze dei futuri abitanti preservando il tessuto storico e fisico dell'area. Quindi questo l'intervento è dedicato in primo luogo alla protezione e in secondo luogo all'adattamento al suo scopo. La prima proposta sul sito è volta ad aprire il suo blocco dal resto dell'isolato ampliando gli spazi verdi che hanno perso il suo significato a causa della privacy del giardino attuale. Successivamente in elevazione dell'angolo per i suoi futuri residenti e possibili guadagni di nuovi punti di vista per aumentare il valore di mercato, considerando che si trova in un ambiente tranquillo all'interno dell'incrocio tra Via Fanti e Via Daverio si propone come un edificio residenziale all'angolo sud-ovest. Con questo approccio si genera un'area di attrazione per il pubblico che serve nella parte nord-est dell'isolato essendo un tranquillo guscio residenziale esterno e uno spazio interno interattivo per gli utenti dell'umanità dove possono interagire con il comunità oltre a partecipare a varie attività. Indipendentemente dalla nuova struttura progettata per riflettere frammenti dell'architettura moderna odierna, la struttura del Convitto esistente si è conservata integralmente tranne alcune piccole aperture per i punti di connessione attraverso il nuovo edificio aggiunto. In termini di identità le nuove aggiunte riflettono somiglianze sui volumi ma distinzioni sulla trama preservando l'identità del Convitto e migliorandone il carattere nel rispetto non solo dell'importanza storica dei convitti ma dell'intera area.
