The challenge taken in this multi-disciplinary project is to explore how architecture can create a socially cohesive space for collective memory, fostering the sense of identity through spatial design and innovation in technology while designing a sustainable, well performing building in the hot and arid climate of Egypt, with strong reference to vernacular architecture. The location chosen to develop the project is the old NDP building, in Downtown Cairo, Egypt, which was one of the key points of the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, the latest spark of collectiveness. The location creates a challenge in terms of climate, urbanism and architecture, as well in terms of the project program, because of the strong meaning and characteristics referring to the history of the site. The core idea of the project focuses on taking lessons from the past, foster education and present the rich culture and history of Egypt. Our proposal is a multifunctional building that consists of a museum experience that goes beyond the physical and reminds the users of the Egyptian culture and history through data visualization and interactive story telling. Acknowledging the power of social neutrality in integrating a building within a strong context, a public living room is designed as a third place with supporting functions that are chosen according to the needs of the society and co-working spaces to foster start up’s and young professionals as well as everyday visitors who would like to enjoy the Nile while being immersed in a mind stimulating environment. As progress and change is inevitable, the spatial experience and the type of uses always requires a change according to the ‘time’, therefore in each space, different paths in the building program are introduced to reflect and accommodate for that change, where past, present and future are intertwining strings of experiences.
