Hybrid pod-up community. A flexible community

The present thesis intends to explore the relationship between Murano and Venice inhabitants with the socio-economic features connected to these islands in terms of spatial developments. It explores the different scenarios for the younger generation of the island and the new nomads. The essay aims to offer different environments and spaces designed for younger inhabitants, spaces not only to live but also to work, gathering multinational corporations, institutions, and digital nomads, transforming Murano into a new environment able to follow and develop the current sharing economy revolution. The project and research site, Murano (Italy), is a complex of small islands inside the Venice lagoon and belongs to the Venice - Murano - Burano municipality. It has about four thousand inhabitants, and with its long tradition of artistic glass production, it became one of the best exporters and producers of glass products. Nevertheless, the city is facing problems with its younger inhabitants, since they tend to leave looking for other work opportunities and facilities abroad. The thesis outcome and connected output is to build new environments able to gather people from different backgrounds and cultures, creating a community to enhance their working, living and socializing behaviors. Co-living and Co-working concepts are at the base of this research, and the project reveals different scenarios of sharing spaces able to respond both to short and long-term living solutions both for the inhabitants and for the business nomads of Murano.

La presente tesi intende esplorare il rapporto tra gli abitanti di Murano e di Venezia e le caratteristiche socio-economiche legate a queste isole in termini di sviluppo spaziale. La tesi esplora diversi scenari futuri per le giovani generazioni dell’isola, ma anche per le generazioni dei nuovi nomadi. Il saggio si propone di offrire diversi ambienti e spazi pensati per gli abitanti più giovani, spazi non solo per vivere ma anche per lavorare, riunendo società multinazionali, istituzioni e comunità di nomadi digitali, trasformando Murano in un nuovo ambiente in grado di seguire e sviluppare l’attuale rivoluzione della sharing economy. Il sito di progetto e di ricerca, Murano (Italia), è un complesso di piccole isole all’interno della laguna di Venezia e appartiene al comune di Venezia - Murano - Burano. Ha circa quattromila abitanti, e con la sua lunga tradizione di produzione di vetro artistico, è diventato uno dei migliori esportatori e produttori di prodotti in vetro. Tuttavia, la città sta affrontando problemi con i suoi abitanti più giovani, poiché tendono ad andarsene alla ricerca di altre opportunità di lavoro e strutture all’estero. L’outcome della tesi e l’output collegato ad esso, è quello di costruire nuovi ambienti in grado di riunire persone di diversa provenienza e cultura, creando una comunità per valorizzare i comportamenti lavorativi, abitativi e di socializzazione. I concepts di Co-living e Co-working sono alla base di questa ricerca, e il progetto rivela diversi scenari di spazi di condivisione in grado di rispondere a soluzioni abitative sia a breve che a lungo termine per rispondere alle esigenze sia degli abitanti che dei business nomadi che arrivano a Murano.
