Open innovation collaborations between incumbents and startups : insights from the digital therapeutics landscape

Digital therapeutics (DTxs) are emerging during the recent years since they have the potential to radically change the clinical and economic management of chronic diseases, that constitutes an important challenge for most healthcare systems around the world. The ageing of the population is the most impacting factor that is making the treatment of chronic diseases a primary concern. Coupling this trend with the shortage of healthcare professionals, there is a risk that the healthcare systems will not cope with the increased workload. Therefore, digital therapeutics represent a huge business opportunity for the pharmaceutical industry. Considering that digital therapeutics are full-fledged therapies, they must follow a precise process of Research and Development. Consequently, specific competences are required to succeed in the process; however, the general expertise of the pharmaceutical sector is still limited. In this context, the research aims at understanding whether pharmaceutical incumbents need to collaborate with external actors, such as specialized digital startups, during the development process of a digital therapy. Furthermore, the research has the objective to comprehend the preferred modalities of collaboration which pharmaceutical incumbents would apply for the partnership along the development phases of digital therapies. Finally, in this innovative and “young” context, the research has the further purpose of contributing to the creation of a shared knowledge base about the topic. For instance, underlining the benefits that digital therapies may bring to companies, physicians and patients.

Le terapie digitali (DTxs) stanno emergendo negli ultimi anni poiché hanno il potenziale di cambiare radicalmente la gestione clinica ed economica delle malattie croniche, che costituisce una sfida importante per la maggior parte dei sistemi sanitari in tutto il mondo. L'invecchiamento della popolazione è il fattore di maggiore impatto che sta rendendo il trattamento delle malattie croniche un problema di primaria importanza. Combinando questa tendenza con la carenza di professionisti sanitari, vi è il rischio che i sistemi sanitari non riusciranno a far fronte all'aumento del carico di lavoro. Conseguentemente, le terapie digitali rappresentano un'enorme opportunità commerciale per l'industria farmaceutica. Considerando che le terapie digitali sono terapie a tutti gli effetti, esse devono seguire un preciso processo di Ricerca e Sviluppo. Di conseguenza, sono necessarie competenze specifiche per avere successo in tale processo; tuttavia, la conoscenza generale nel settore farmaceutico è ancora limitata. In questo contesto, la ricerca mira a comprendere la necessità degli incumbent del settore farmaceutico di collaborare con attori esterni, come le startup specializzate, durante il processo di sviluppo di una terapia digitale. Inoltre, la ricerca si pone l'obiettivo di comprendere le modalità di collaborazione preferite dagli incumbent del farmaceutico per la partnership lungo le fasi di sviluppo delle terapie digitali. Infine, in questo contesto innovativo e "giovane", la ricerca ha l'ulteriore scopo di contribuire alla creazione di una base di conoscenza condivisa sull'argomento. Per esempio, sottolineando i benefici che le terapie digitali possano portare alle aziende, ai medici e ai pazienti.
