Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is twofold. Our work aims on the one hand to provide evidence on what are the main drivers and barriers to implement Industry 4.0 technologies in luxury manufacturing companies - i.e. elements that support the movement towards implementation and elements that slow down digitization with respect to this specific industry and its peculiarities - and on the other hand, how digital technologies in this particular production process interplay with craftsmanship - i.e. in which phases, with what objectives and what is the focus of the production process. Design / methodology / approach – The thesis reports on a multiple-case study of six luxury manufacturing companies with a clear position on the research topic. Four of these present Industry 4.0 use cases in their production process. Findings – Results presented five main benefits and three barrier factors of Industry 4.0 in the context of luxury manufacturing. Furthermore, there is an indication of which are the interested and interesting phases for digital technologies and which ones need to be kept artisanal. Research limitations / implications – The thesis contributes to the academic debate about Industry 4.0, in particular laying the foundations for future research around the specific relationship it has with the luxury industry and its distinctive component: craftsmanship. The limitations concern the very nature of the sample: circumscription of the productive sectors involved; different technological awareness shown by the participants. Practical implications – Findings offer valuable insights for practice, with implications for the design of renewed and enhanced production process. They also aim to provide a list of relevant variables to look at when evaluating and implementing digital technology introduction. Originality / value – This study advances a novel focus in studying luxury manufacturing companies: the relationship between digital innovation and craftsmanship. The semantic, practical and operational analysis allows to understand how these two components can be well-coupled and how Industry 4.0 results as a valuable and viable solution to bring innovation within these realities. Keywords - Manufacturing technology, Industry 4.0, Luxury, Craftsmanship
