Relational architecture, protagonist of this thesis work, is what is proposed here as a contribution to one of the most delicate and relevant issues within our country today (Italy): the territorial fragility. Specifically, reference is made to particular situations which see as main actors unstable, fragmentary pieces of landscape characterized by the coexistence of two specific conditions. On one hand, the highway which, with its mono-directionality, mono-functionality and monotony, imposes itself in the context as a self-referential element at the service of the only developed centers; on the other, the crossed landscape which, put aside, appears forgotten. These are situations, on the whole, fragile, in which the anticipated territorial realities, antithetical and conflicting, are unable to establish any spatial or social dialogue, and therefore to build that complex relational system that is the landscape; they are rather non-landscapes or forgotten landscapes, where even the imaginaries of the different populations (roadusers on one side, the inhabitants of the settlements on the other) are fragmented and competing. Furthermore, in this situation, a third actor joins punctually the others: it is personified by that areas located on the edge of the motorway platforms, which are often comparable to “non-places" or "spaces" without identity. The project lot belongs to one of these areas. It is located at the Campora Est service station, between the roadways Milan-Genoa/Genoa-Milan of the A7 motorway and a portion of the territory of Serra Riccò municipality including the hamlets of Verrone and Serra Chiesa, today considered fragile, peripheral and therefore Inner Areas. It manifests itself as a "space", an extended area which, if observed at a macro-scale, appears as a real topographical caesura, a further distance between the highway dimension and the crossed landscape one. But it is not. The proposed strategy in fact, arises on the contrary right from the reading of a strong potential in this area which, placed close to both the antithetical conditions, has instead all the characteristics to be able to shorter the distances between the two, reconciling their missed relationships, making new ones emerge and then transforming its being a caesura into an hinge. The construction of a relational architecture, as a limit “in between", in the specific meaning of threshold, is therefore what is proposed as a response capable of operating this overturning. It manifests itself as a single transformative action between the territorial and the architectural scale which, configuring itself as an autonomous entity capable at the same time of mediating between the antithetical conditions and to regulate the relationships, it makes it possible to mend the existing gaps, giving a new identity to the area, transforming it into an attractive pole and an active centrality capable of reactivating the territory. Specifically, this is configured as a stereotomic form-structure generated according to an action-reaction principle to the characters of the two conditions. A single entity, halfway between the infrastructural work and the architectural object, which sees an overlapping of flows, a plurality of accesses and the coexistence of different populations. The potential of the motorway as a global agent with social and narrative power is combined here with the vocations of a territory that need to be staged, giving life to a new implemented service area with a bidirectional offer, where the highway dimension, from artificer of the crossed landscape marginalization, now proposes itself as a stage to reinvigorate it. However, general purpose of the thesis work, it is not only to illustrate a strategy and its concrete translation into the project through a precise methodological path based on research and knowledge of the territory, but also to trigger further reflections and ideas around this topic. The project itself serves as an application example since it proposes itself as a well-wisher of new questions and promoter of new actions. The critical-theoretical but at the same time operational approach that characterizes the work bears witness to this will and the structure of the thesis is a reflection of it.
