With the new european politics regarding education and the increasing internationalization of studens, a reflection on the role of student housing is needed, now more than ever, since it has been presenting important gaps and problems for some time. Reason why the research, which followed an initial process of census of universities both in Europe and in Milan, such as Università Bocconi, Politecnico di Milano, Università degli studi di Milano, University of Oxford, EHT Zurich, Delft University of Technology, Université PSL and Technical University of Munich, tries to recreate the idea of the university context present in our country through a direct comparison with the above mentioned universities, analyzing the phenomenon of student living in all its shapes, facets and needs. To support the theoretical contribution, information regarding real dynamics and needs of the contemporary student has been collected through the administration of questionnaires, from which have been extracted guidelines to rethink the concept of student housing with a view on a more inclusive and participated living form. In parallel to an investigation format addressed to the user, it is needed to introduce the possible scenarios and outlets that this new planning must consider and make its own, in order to be able to create sustainable results not only in the environmental field but also in the social and urban ones. Results and reflections emerged from the research found meaning following the identification of a real need of Università di Bergamo to increase the number of sleeping accomodations. In response to this, the project experimentation is placed in the context of Villaggio degli Sposi, a neighborhood in the south-west periphery of the city, which was born from a great cultural vision, threthened today by living and social discomfort and involved in the partecipation in the Programma innovativo Nazionale per la Qualità dell’Abitare (National Innovative Program for the Quality of Living). The project Co.Generation aims for, in a participated way, the quality of living, the social cohesion and the promotion of public space by proposing synergistic actions able to give a new identity to the place and the the theme of the student housing in the contemporary living. With this in mind, the process of this project tries to present itself as a model, able to transversally answer the different needs and problems, starting from the lack of an adequate number of sleeping accomodations for university students, to later proceed to the phenomena of marginalization that characterize the italian suburbs.
