The quiet place. A project for a new reading space in the Ducal Palace

The origins of this work take place during the Final Workshop. Infect it is thanks to this course and to a subsequent and more in-depth study of the Giardino Dei Semplici that the potential of this area appears clear. At the same time, however, it is also highlighted that this space, once an integral part of the Ducal Palace, is now neglected. The function of the Garden today is uncertain; for the visitor it is only a passage, a shortcut, to reach the Rustica space intended for temporary exhibitions of modern art. The new intervention is meant to provide a new reading space: a modern reinterpretation of the concept of “studiolo”. This proposal aims to bring back the interest to this area and to the Garden itself by adding a function that is useful for students, professors and researchers who work or live in the city of Mantua. This project also proposes a strong relationship with the Festival Letteratura during the days in which this event takes place. Another goal of this thesis is to highlight the entrance to the area which is still not very visible, making it difficult to identify the Garden.

Questo elaborato inizia a prendere vita durante il corso del Final Workshop. E’ proprio grazie a questo corso e ad un successivo e più approfondito studio del Giardino Dei Semplici che appare chiaro il potenziale di questa area. Allo stesso tempo però, viene anche messo in risalto che questo spazio, un tempo parte integrante di Palazzo Ducale, è ora trascurato. La funzione del Giardino oggi è incerta; per il visitatore è solo una zona di passaggio per raggiungere lo spazio della Rustica destinato a mostre temporanee di arte moderna. Il nuovo intervento propone un nuovo spazio di lettura: una rivisitazione moderna del concetto di “studiolo”. Tale proposta ha come scopo quello di riportare interesse nei confronti di questa area e al Giardino stesso aggiungendo una funzione che si dimostri utile per gli studenti, i professori e i ricercatori che lavorano o vivono nella città di Mantova. Questo progetto propone anche una forte relazione con il Festival Letteratura durante i giorni in cui questo evento prende luogo. L’ulteriore scopo di questo progetto è quello di mettere in risalto l’ingresso all’area che tuttora risulta poco visibile rendendo difficile l’individuazione del Giardino.
