Regrow. Sistema prodotto-servizio per il social microfarming a scala urbana sviluppabile attraverso processi di produzione aperta e distribuita

This thesis explores the relationship between food and city, first by studying how food production has evolved on an industrial scale and then investigating how citizens' eating habits have changed, and it questions how design can fit into this relationship by promoting the adoption of more sustainable lifestyles. In the twenty-first century, most of the people on the planet - particularly in industrialized countries - live in cities, so today, as never before, supplying them daily with fresh food is a matter of vital importance. However, producing (industrially) and transporting such a large volume of food generates serious issues that affect the whole world: pollution, global warming, food waste - just to name a few. Here we study how design can stimulate city dwellers to reconsider the importance of food, often taken for granted, rebuilding a new, healthier and more conscious relationship with it. The city is the background to this change, and at the same time it is a direct protagonist: its previously forgotten spaces are converted into shared places, the interstitial spaces are transformed into productive micro-areas in which the product is obviously food. By exploiting the urban material flows and the new panoramas offered by digital manufacturing, through the project proposed here we want to transform some side effects of life in the city into virtuous circles, in which sustainability and sharing are the basis of every choice.

Questa tesi esplora il rapporto tra cibo e città, prima studiando come si sia evoluta la produzione del cibo su scala industriale e poi indagando come siano cambiate le abitudini alimentari dei cittadini, e si interroga su come il design possa inserirsi in tale rapporto favorendo l’adozione di stili di vita più sostenibili. Nel ventunesimo secolo la maggior parte delle persone del pianeta – in particolare nei paesi industrializzati – vive nelle città, quindi oggi come non mai approvvigionarle quotidianamente con del cibo fresco è una questione di vitale importanza. Produrre (industrialmente) e trasportare un volume così grande di alimenti genera però gravi problematiche che si ripercuotono su tutto il mondo: inquinamento, riscaldamento globale, sprechi di cibo – solo per citarne alcune. In questa sede si studia come il design possa stimolare gli abitanti delle città a riconsiderare l’importanza del cibo, spesso dato per scontato, ricostruendo con esso un nuovo rapporto, più sano e cosciente. La città fa da sfondo a questo cambiamento, e al contempo ne è protagonista diretta: i suoi spazi prima dimenticati vengono convertiti in luoghi condivisi, gli spazi interstiziali sono trasformati in microaree produttive in cui il prodotto è, ovviamente, il cibo. Sfruttando i flussi materiali urbani e i nuovi panorami offerti dalla fabbricazione digitale, attraverso il progetto qui proposto si vogliono trasformare alcuni effetti collaterali della vita in città in circoli virtuosi, in cui la sostenibilità e la condivisione sono alla base di ogni scelta.
