Riattivare Ca' de Grassi. Sperimentazioni progettuali per il recupero del borgo e delle Case a Torre nell'Appennino reggiano

Riding the renewed interest in the extra-urban landscape, the aim of this master’s degree thesis is to develop the topic of recovery and reconnection of the hilly and middle-mountain inland areas of the province of Reggio Emilia. This work starts from the local, regional and national proposals that have been oriented towards the recovery of inland areas; however, these are not yet sufficient to overcome the geographical and social distance between urban areas and more marginal areas. Therefore, the proposed strategy aims to reactivate the villages of the Apennines by exploiting, as hubs of the network, an architectural typology that is widespread in the area: the tower house. Here, it has been planned to include functions and activities that will transform the stewarding points of the territory into new hubs, able to propose a local regeneration capable of providing services and economic benefits, while at the same time renewing a sense of awareness and belonging to the places. Following a survey of the tower houses present in the area, it has been decided to work on a slow connection between Reggio Emilia and the municipality of Viano. Lastly, the design proposal works on the residential compound of Ca’ de Grassi, studying specific projects, grafts and recoveries that can act in a coherent way towards the existing buildings, the different architectural typologies and the states of conservation. The new insertion, the recovery of the interiors, the regeneration of the casings, the grafts, as well as the rethinking of the external spaces, as a whole will envisage new scenarios able to satisfy the formal and functional needs, not only of the specific village but of the entire axis. This dissertation investigates different design solutions and focuses on the local material dimension, paying attention to details along with the users’ needs. A stable, a residence, a multipurpose building and a space for meditation, once co-ordinated, they will provide a scenario of recovery and reactivation of the village of Ca’ de Grassi, being respectful of the place and with a low architectural impact.

Cavalcando il rinnovato interesse per il paesaggio extra-urbano si è scelto di sviluppare un argomento di tesi che lavora sul recupero e sulla riconnessione delle Aree Interne collinari e montane della provincia di Reggio Emilia. La tesi parte dalle proposte locali, regionali e nazionali che sono orientate al recupero delle aree interne ma ancora non sufficienti a superare il distacco geografico e sociale tra le zone urbane e le aree più marginali. La strategia proposta vuole dunque riattivare i borghi dell’Appennino sfruttando come centri di snodo della rete una tipologia architettonica ben diffusa nel territorio: la casa a torre. Qui si prevede l’inserimento di funzioni e attività che trasformino i presidi del territorio in nuovi fulcri, in grado di proporre una rigenerazione locale capace di fornire servizi e benefici economici, rinnovando allo stesso tempo un senso di consapevolezza e appartenenza dei luoghi. In seguito ad una ricognizione delle case a torre presenti, si è scelto di lavorare ad un collegamento lento tra Reggio Emilia e il comune di Viano. La proposta progettuale lavora, infine, sul nucleo di Ca’ de Grassi, studiando progetti puntuali, innesti e recuperi che possano agire in maniera coerente rispetto agli edifici presenti, alle diverse tipologie architettoniche e agli stati di conservazione. Il nuovo inserimento, il recupero degli interni, la rigenerazione degli involucri, gli innesti e il ripensamento degli spazi esterni propongono nuovi scenari in grado di assecondare le necessità formali e funzionali non solo dello specifico borgo ma dell’intero asse. La tesi indaga diverse soluzioni progettuali e mette al centro la dimensione materica locale, facendo attenzione ai dettagli e alle necessità degli utenti. Una stalla, una residenza, un edifico polivalente e uno spazio per la meditazione messi a sistema propongono uno scenario di recupero e riattivazione del borgo di Ca’ de Grassi a basso impatto architettonico e rispettoso del luogo.
