Innesti silenziosi. Inserimento fra le stratificazioni dell’area di San Sepolcro, Milano

The stratifications in the ancient city are almost crystallised as if locked in a different time that contrasts with the chaotic modernity of the metropolis. “One of the most atrocious characteristics of our age is noise” (V. Magnago Lampugnani), and the search for the silence of a slower reality becomes a vital necessity to resist the frenzy of everyday life. The recent enormous and continuous transformations of the city, linked to the new needs of workplaces, living, and mutual interaction, highlight the need to think of a new type of urbanity linked to the theme of durability. In this sense, architecture plays a leading role in the possibility of designing complex buildings capable of hosting a broader articulation of functional programs, where interdependence between workplaces, production, teaching, and living are desirable but not required. Buildings that have the presumption of the longest possible life span, trying to be specific in the context in which they are inserted, responding to the characteristics and urban or landscape conditions of the surrounding physical and social realities. This research refers to the architecture illustrated in J.M. Richards’ book of functional English buildings from the last decades of the 19th century: warehouses, factories, ports that are functionally and morphologically different from each other but that belong to the same architectural tradition. Through a process of abstraction, the common qualities of clarity and simplicity, the emphasis on the basic geometry of architecture rather than the ritual of historical styles, the use of building materials in a way that emphasises more strongly their intrinsic qualities, the relationship of goals and means that functionalism in this sense implies, are all identifiable. The proposal of the thesis foresees the experimentation of these themes in the area of San Sepolcro, a central zone of the city of Milan determined by a heterogeneous and complex design, through a silent graft that gives the perception of not being really new because in adherent continuity with the context. The proposed design solution consists in the articulation of the project in two volumes, one to complete the interrupted block and the other as an element of reconnection of the evident stratifications of the ancient and renaissance city, generating a formally defined urban space that links contextuality and autonomy.

Le stratificazioni nella città antica sono quasi cristallizzate, come bloccate in un tempo diverso che contrasta con la modernità caotica della metropoli. “Una delle caratteristiche più atroci della nostra epoca è il rumore” (V. Magnago Lampugnani), e la ricerca del silenzio di una realtà più lenta diventa necessità vitale per resistere alla frenesia del quotidiano. Le recenti enormi e continue trasformazioni della città legate alle nuove necessità dei luoghi del lavoro, dell’abitare e dell’interazione reciproca, esaltano l’esigenza di pensare un nuovo tipo di urbanità legato al tema della durabilità. In questo senso l’architettura riveste un ruolo protagonista nella possibilità di progettare edifici complessi capaci di ospitare una più ampia articolazione dei programmi funzionali, dove sia auspicabile ma non richiesta l’interdipendenza fra i luoghi del lavoro, della produzione, della didattica e dell’abitare. Edifici che abbiano la presunzione della maggior durata possibile cercando di essere specifici nel contesto in cui si inseriscono, rispondendo ai caratteri e alle condizioni urbane o paesaggistiche delle realtà fisiche e sociali circostanti. La presente ricerca fa riferimento alle architetture illustrate nel testo di J.M. Richards di edifici funzionali inglesi degli ultimi decenni del XIX secolo: depositi, fabbriche, porti funzionalmente e morfologicamente molto diversi fra loro ma che appartengono alla stessa tradizione architettonica. Attraverso un processo di astrazione sono individuabili le qualità comuni di chiarezza e semplicità, l’enfasi sulla geometria di base dell’architettura piuttosto che il rituale degli stili storici, l’uso dei materiali da costruzione in un modo che mette in risalto con più forza le loro qualità intrinseche, la relazione di fini e mezzi che il funzionalismo in questo senso implica. La proposta della tesi prevede la sperimentazione di questi temi nell’ambito di San Sepolcro, area centrale della città di Milano determinata da un disegno eterogeneo e complesso, attraverso un innesto silenzioso che dia la percezione di non essere davvero nuovo perchè in continuità aderente al contesto. La soluzione progettuale avanzata consiste nell’articolazione del progetto in due volumi, uno di completamento dell’isolato interrotto e l’altro come elemento di ricongiunzione fra le stratificazioni evidenti della città antica e rinascimentale, generando uno spazio urbano formalmente definito che lega contestualità e autonomia.
