On the trails of minerals : Nebida and its terrace on the sea. Sulle orme dei minerali : Nebida e la sua terrazza sul mare

Suspended on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea, on the south-western coast of Sardinia, the Laveria Lamarmora is an architectural complex designed according to the production process of the Nebida mine. Its condition of ruin, generated by decades of decay due to lack of use, gives it a sense of timelessness. The absence of the roofing, which leaves the plan and the structure on display, and the permanent traces of the mining work, scattered on the surrounding landscape, reveal the shape and pattern of this articulated system, and become the premise of a project proposal aimed at making legible the meaning and the history of these places. The goal is to reconnect the Laveria Lamarmora conceptually, visually and physically to the village of Nebida and to the mining sites of the surroundings, to allow it to be rediscovered and ensure its safe fruition. A path of intersection between old and new is proposed: a modern layer that does not erase but highlights the traces of the existing, does not rebuild but make the history of Laveria and its flows readable. The new promenade starts from the entrance of the village and retraces the miners' road on discontinuously paved paths, which allow the conformation and materiality of the landscape to emerge. These paths are supported by ramps and stairways where the terrain is steeper and are integrated with existing services and new auxiliary structures. The project involves the construction of a series of Belvedere for rest and contemplation of the landscape located along the trail and in correspondence with significant elements, which reflect the very concept of the architecture of the washery, intersecting the rocks and the existing vegetation and creating a system of overhanging terraces, which underline the orography of the land and support it, softening their geometric shapes at times. The aim of the project is to create a new public space accessible by sea and land, and to prefigure a model of "silent intervention" that is an opportunity for the regeneration of the abandoned mining landscapes of Sardinia.

Sospesa su un promontorio roccioso a strapiombo sul mare, sulla costa sud-occidentale della Sardegna, la Laveria Lamarmora è un complesso architettonico progettato in funzione del processo produttivo della Miniera di Nebida. La sua condizione di rovina, generata da decenni di abbandono, le conferisce uno stato di atemporalità. L’assenza delle coperture, che lascia in mostra la pianta e la struttura, e le tracce indelebili del lavoro minerario, che costellano il paesaggio circostante, rivelano la forma e lo schema di questo sistema articolato e diventano premessa di una proposta progettuale volta a favorirne la fruizione e a rendere maggiormente leggibile il significato e la storia di questi luoghi. L’obiettivo è quello di riconnettere concettualmente, visualmente e fisicamente la Laveria Lamarmora al centro abitato di Nebida e ai siti minerari del territorio per permetterne la riscoperta e consentirne la fruizione in sicurezza. Si propone un percorso di intersezione tra antico e nuovo, uno strato moderno che non cancelli ma evidenzi le tracce dell’esistente, non ricostruisca ma renda leggibile la storia della Laveria e dei suoi flussi. La nuova promenade collega il centro abitato con la laveria e ripercorre la strada dei minatori su percorsi pavimentati in modo discontinuo, che lasciano emergere la conformazione e la materialità del paesaggio. Tali sentieri sono coadiuvati da rampe e scalinate laddove il terreno è più scosceso, e integrati con i servizi esistenti e con nuove strutture accessorie alla visita. L’intervento prevede la realizzazione di una serie di belvedere per il riposo e la contemplazione del panorama, dislocati lungo il cammino, in corrispondenza di elementi significativi, che riprendono il concetto stesso dell’architettura della Laveria, intersecando le rocce e la vegetazione esistenti e creando un sistema di terrazze aggettanti, che sottolineano l’orografia del terreno e la assecondano, addolcendo a tratti le loro forme geometriche. L’obiettivo è quello di creare un nuovo spazio pubblico accessibile via mare e via terra, e di prefigurare un modello di “intervento silenzioso” che sia opportunità di rigenerazione e messa a sistema dei paesaggi minerari abbandonati della Sardegna.
