Through the collection of the documents and materials regarding restoration interventions, the goal of the thesis is to propose a preliminary but systematical synthesis of studies and publications regarding restoration interventions carried out in China, so as to introduce the complex themes and questions related to the culture and the practices in the discipline. In line with the researches achieved by prof.C. Dibiase , a careful identification of the case studies is proposed. First of all, the theoretical context was explored through a bibliographical research to clarify the main stages in the cultural debate regarding restoration. An original contribution is given by the attempt to relate the studies of the scholars to the national laws. That points out the changes of the main principles to define “how to restore” in different period. For instance, the development of the concept of “historic condition” and change of the word from “reinstating” historic condition to “retaining” historic condition have been clarified in the first chapter. Moreover, to identify the case studies which could be compared, the selection criteria of it involves many aspects, including historical and artistical relevance of the monuments (the sites to be protected at national level), the geographical area (Shanxi and Hebei province), the construction techniques (wooden structures), the year of construction (the Tang and Song Dynasty) and the function (Temples). Based on those similar situations of different cases, the interventions have been done in different period could show the changes of intentions and characteristics of restoration. In the light of the researches carried out by prof.C.Dibiase , the deep analysis was proposed for each cases, not only from the bibliography, but also from the direct investigation on sites. Collected pictures, drawings and the information about restoration provide a wide and detailed description about the interventions which had been carried out. That reveals the consequences on buildings – sometimes radical – as the result of the restoration works. Furthermore, with the comments by authors, scholars and the officials, the different ways of the general restoration principle, such as “restoration” and “preservation” have been applied to practices over time emerge. This research might be the first step of a wider collection of case studies, the more cases may lead to reach a more objective conclusion. Thus, at present, to propose some conclusions is considered to be too hasty. However, still the remarks of the comparison of the case studies are put forward. In particular, the thesis underlines the results of a process based on national experiences and on the increasing international communications, that points out a path oriented to the principles promoted by the Venice Charter. The thesis is a basis for the future works, which aims to reach a in-depth exploration and investigation in restoration. For example, the attitude towards the sites as the level of province or city, the role played by the institutions, the approaches which are done in Chinese context.

Abstract
Through the collection of the documents and materials regarding restoration interventions, the goal of the thesis is to propose a preliminary but systematical synthesis of studies and publications regarding restoration interventions carried out in China, so as to introduce the complex themes and questions related to the culture and the practices in the discipline.
