The automotive industry is one of the most valuable and innovative industries of present times. It is constantly posed under scrutiny for its relevance in the race for a sustainable future as it is one of the most polluting industries to date. The largest automotive manufacturers regularly exhibit the strategies and performance of their vehicles and production processes. Less, however, is reported regarding their facilities and real estate, despite them owning thousands of office buildings, dealerships, warehouses, etc., all around the globe. The purpose of this work is to analyse the various sources through which major manufacturers convey their sustainability strategies, with the aim of revealing more details about the environmental impact of their non-production facilities. The study revealed that manufacturers almost never collect information regarding these types of facilities, mainly to avoid extra costs. They justify this reasoning by belittling the contribution of non-manufacturing operations relatively to the global impact of their vehicles. Major automotive manufacturers also rely on the fact that they are not obliged by laws or regulations, as the focus continues to be placed on the impact of vehicles and production. Some figures found in this analysis, however, revealed that the contribution of non-manufacturing activities is not as small as it is claimed to be. Understandably, some automotive producers are more advanced than others in terms of sustainability behaviour applied to their facilities and real estate, especially those based in Europe and North America. They also tend to include more details about the performance of non-manufacturing activities. Independently from the advancement of their progress, all manufacturers, and the industry in general, have much margin for improvement in their sustainable behaviour.

Abstract
Independently from the advancement of their progress, all manufacturers, and the industry in general, have much margin for improvement in their sustainable behaviour.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
