Medical waste is one of the biggest issues of healthcare, around 90% of it can be considered similar to household waste, while the other 10% is considered dangerous and potentially infectious. Sharps are considered the most dangerous type of waste, especially hollow-bore needles, which are more likely to infect once a percutaneous injury occurs. Inadequate healthcare waste management and infrastructure, limited awareness, knowledge, and resources make the problem more severe in low-income developing countries, especially in remote and rural areas, where, due to scarcity of healthcare centers and workers, remote healthcare delivery activities, like outreach and mobile clinics, are performed. This thesis focuses on hypodermic needles waste management during these activities, where waste must be brought back due to the lack of treatment centers on the spot, with the aim of improving it in order to reduce needlestick injuries after an injection and during the transport back. An in-depth research on the issues and the context led to the conceptualization and the development of a new small and portable device capable of making hypodermic needles inert after an injection. The device uses induction heating to heat up the needle, which then melts its way through the syringe plunger in order to be ‘‘encapsulated’’, the barrel itself then acts as a barrier to protect the people. The process brings other advantages, such as reducing the footprint of syringes.

Abstract
The process brings other advantages, such as reducing the footprint of syringes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
