Bombay revisited. Extension of a city museum

The following thesis is a research by design proposal for an extension of the city museum of Mumbai which is also known as Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum. This was the first international competition for a public building ever that happened in the city but unfortunately, the competition was canceled due to certain complications that were raised by the local political leaders and the people. But my research has shown that the project can be reimagined if few alterations are done in the design brief. Further studies revealed that the program of the competition never addressed the main problems faced by the existing museum. So, a deeper analysis was conducted to understand the actual situation of the existing museum and the problems it was facing and conclude this thesis with a design-based solution addressing all those issues. This thesis is composed of three main sections: research, analysis, and solutions. The first part focuses on the research at various levels. ● The paradigm shift in the approach of museums both at the national & international level - how museums have transformed over time, both in terms of architecture language and spatial dimensions. The influence of the historic events on those projects during that period – research into the museums around the world, its history, political contexts, the approach of the architect to design the building, the perception and reaction of people then and now, understanding what changes it brought to the society/ context/ field of architecture? ● Study on museums and cultural buildings in Mumbai and the condition of those buildings. ● Case studies on international competition and museum extension that has happened in India, successful museum extensions that have been completed around the world which are in close lines with the thesis proposal, and a study on a state-of-the-art museum which is similar to the final design proposal. ● Studies related to city and Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum ● The 2014 international competition for Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum and its events ● The act of extensions done to the heritage museums in the 21st century. ● Programs that attract visitors around the globe and how can it fit into local cultural concepts. ● Global architectural competitions and visualizations and their influence in Mumbai (from the one that was proposed for Bhau Daji Lad museum in 2014) ● Influence of global architects and architecture in Mumbai. The second part of the book focuses on analysis around projects at different scales. Most of the studies focus on its context and its influence on the same. Lastly, all these researches and analysis concludes with a design proposal for the extension for Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum considering today’s museum standards, a fresh design brief addressing all the problems that led to the cancellation of the competition and a revised design program which focuses on the need for an extension. Under the idea of cultural transfer my aim in this design thesis is to critically understand the existing cultural and architectural styles- their similarities and differences through a critical lens while also looking at the innovation from around the world.

La seguente tesi è una proposta progettuale di ricerca per un ampliamento del museo cittadino di Mumbai, noto anche come Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum. Questo è stato il primo concorso internazionale per un edificio pubblico mai realizzato in città, ma purtroppo il concorso è stato annullato a causa di alcune complicazioni sollevate dai leader politici locali e dalla gente. Ma la mia ricerca ha dimostrato che il progetto può essere reinventato se vengono apportate poche modifiche al brief di progettazione. Ulteriori studi hanno rivelato che il programma del concorso non ha mai affrontato i principali problemi affrontati dal museo esistente. Quindi, è stata condotta un'analisi più approfondita per comprendere la situazione reale del museo esistente e i problemi che stava affrontando e conclude questa tesi con una soluzione basata sul design che affronta tutti questi problemi. Questa tesi è composta da tre sezioni principali: ricerca, analisi e soluzioni. La prima parte si concentra sulla ricerca a vari livelli. ● Il cambio di paradigma nell'approccio dei musei sia a livello nazionale che internazionale - come i musei si sono trasformati nel tempo, sia in termini di linguaggio architettonico che di dimensioni spaziali. L'influenza degli eventi storici su quei progetti in quel periodo: la ricerca sui musei di tutto il mondo, la sua storia, i contesti politici, l'approccio dell'architetto nel progettare l'edificio, la percezione e la reazione delle persone allora e ora, capire cosa cambia ha portato alla società/ contesto/ campo dell'architettura? ● Studio sui musei e sugli edifici culturali di Mumbai e sulle condizioni di quegli edifici. ● Casi di studio sul concorso internazionale e sull'estensione museale che ha avuto luogo in India, estensioni museali di successo che sono state completate in tutto il mondo che sono in stretta linea con la proposta di tesi e uno studio su un museo all'avanguardia che è simile alla proposta progettuale finale. ● Studi relativi alla città e al Museo del Dr. Bhau Daji Lad ● Il concorso internazionale 2014 per il Museo Dr. Bhau Daji Lad e i suoi eventi ● L'atto di ampliamento dei musei del patrimonio nel 21° secolo. ● Programmi che attraggono visitatori da tutto il mondo e come possono adattarsi ai concetti culturali locali. ● Concorsi e visualizzazioni globali di architettura e loro influenza a Mumbai (da quella proposta per il museo Bhau Daji Lad nel 2014) ● Influenza degli architetti e dell'architettura globali a Mumbai. La seconda parte del libro si concentra sull'analisi di progetti a diverse scale. La maggior parte degli studi si concentra sul suo contesto e sulla sua influenza sullo stesso. Infine, tutte queste ricerche e analisi si concludono con una proposta progettuale per l'ampliamento del Museo Dr. Bhau Daji Lad considerando gli standard museali odierni, un nuovo brief di progettazione che affronta tutti i problemi che hanno portato all'annullamento del concorso e un programma di progettazione rivisto che si concentra sulla necessità di una proroga. Sotto l'idea del trasferimento culturale, il mio obiettivo in questa tesi di design è comprendere criticamente gli stili culturali e architettonici esistenti, le loro somiglianze e differenze attraverso una lente critica, osservando allo stesso tempo l'innovazione da tutto il mondo.
