The project is located on Piazzale Martesana in the city of Milan, which is in the region of urban regeneration according to PGT 2030. The site is currently occupied by an existing infrastructure – a pump station and the vacant space left around is consumed as a public parking lot and occasionally it accommodates markets (mostly on Saturdays) for the nearby residents. The neighborhood around the block mainly consists of residential buildings, and across Viale Monza stands an education facility with sports fields. Given that the second municipality of Milan is in need of accommodations especially for foreign citizens and for small and medium living units (Comune di Milano, SISI 2011), the aim of the project has been to provide youngsters with affordable and sustainable housing and enable them to spend quality time here. The function of market could instead be rearranged in a different manner. The main structure is a concrete framework. To avoid the excessive use of concrete, the project tried to incorporate recycling pallets as a major building material. The structural challenge was the incompatible dimension of shipping pallets for goods regarding the scale of architecture. In previous attempts in architectural practices with pallets, there have been a lot of additional metallic elements used to reinforce the structure. However, in this case, the task was tackled by combining the pallets in a modular way and forming the wall panels and mezzanine floor slabs instead of concrete. Moreover, there are further considerations taken with regard to the green facades.

Abstract
Moreover, there are further considerations taken with regard to the green facades.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
