Reshoring : interconnection with Industry 4.0 and impact of Covid-19

The first important concept of our study is reshoring, the relocation decision of the production from the offshoring country to a previous or a new one, explaining what it is, upsides and downsides that a company may face up in this process, reasons and advantages sought that drive this kind of decisions, such as cost, quality, flexibility, and customer service. Next to reshoring, we positioned Industry 4.0, an ongoing tendency that is revolutionizing manufacturing and services in every business, with his primary pillars, the main technologies, pros and cons, and thus the aim is to have a clear idea about how it impacts on a firm. After that, we may arrive to core aspect of this report, the evaluation of the interrelation between reshoring and Industry 4.0, discovering how the latter fosters relocation to home country providing new advantages and new opportunities to firms. Impossible not to consider the Covid-19 pandemic, which obviously has an important role, that on the one hand it is turning out a facilitator in reshoring, but on the other it makes more difficult huge investments in technology innovation. To better clarify all these topics, we also use some study cases of reshoring decisions made by Adidas, Prada Group, Fondazione Altagamma, and Tex-Med Alliances, four players that before or after the outbreak decided to relocate production with different strategies and different outcomes.

Il primo concetto importante del nostro studio è il reshoring, la decisione di delocalizzazione della produzione dal paese di offshoring a uno precedente o nuovo, spiegando cos'è, vantaggi e svantaggi che un'azienda può incontrare in questo processo, ragioni e vantaggi ricercati che guidano questo tipo di decisioni, come il costo, la qualità, la flessibilità e il servizio clienti. Accanto al reshoring, abbiamo posizionato l'Industria 4.0, una tendenza in corso che sta rivoluzionando la produzione e i servizi in ogni settore, con i suoi pilastri chiave, le principali tecnologie, pro e contro, e quindi l'obiettivo è avere un'idea chiara di come essa impatta su un'azienda. Successivamente si può arrivare all'aspetto centrale di questo report, la valutazione del legame tra reshoring e Industria 4.0, scoprendo come quest'ultima favorisca la delocalizzazione nel paese di origine fornendo nuovi vantaggi e nuove opportunità alle imprese. Impossibile non considerare la pandemia di Covid-19, che ovviamente ha un ruolo importante, che da un lato si sta rivelando un facilitatore nel reshoring, ma dall'altro rende più difficili gli ingenti investimenti in innovazione tecnologica. Per chiarire meglio tutti questi argomenti, abbiamo utilizzato anche alcuni casi studio di reshoring di decisioni prese da Adidas, Gruppo Prada, Fondazione Altagamma e Tex-Med Alliances, quattro attori che prima o dopo l'epidemia hanno deciso di delocalizzare la produzione con strategie e risultati diversi .
