Environmental design, an ineluctable part in the safeguard of endangered species. A project of multispecies urbanism for the preservation of fin whales

Design is an integral part of human life, every object, space, situation that the human being experiences is steeped in design. It is therefore impossible that this discipline does not play an important role in the phenomenon that has been spreading in recent decades: the sixth mass extinction. This master thesis aims to investigate the role of environmental design in the protection of animals at risk of extinction. The text guides the reader on a journey that begins with a search from the general to the particular to study the relationships between animals and the world, animals and urban spaces, animals and man. In particular, through a study of several examples, is presented the influence that design can have on man's perception of a species and consequently on his commitment to safeguarding it. Subsequently, a part of the analysis of the problems narrows the field and focuses on a species, the fin whale, and a place, the north-western part of the Mediterranean Sea. One of the main causes of the extinction of this specimen is maritime traffic, the ships, in fact, produce sounds that interfere with the vocalizations emitted by fin whales. The project of this thesis, therefore, has the ambitious goal of protecting whales from this threat and bringing man closer to this species that is often distant and little known, but certainly majestic and important for the survival of the human being. Given the dual purpose of the idea, it was necessary to divide the project into two parts: one submerged dedicated to whales and one emerged for humans. The submerged part consists of a silent highway with sound-absorbing walls capable of blocking the sounds emitted by ships and letting those of the animal pass through. The emerged part, on the other hand, is composed of a series of floating platforms that allow humans to get close to the animal in the rest period between one migration and the other. It is a project that develops in phases, this design phase will have to be followed by a prototyping one, but without any doubt, this idea lays a solid foundation for a possible future in which whales will no longer be at risk of extinction.

Il design è parte integrante della vita dell’uomo, ogni oggetto, spazio, situazione che l’essere umano vive è intrisa di design. E’ impossibile quindi che questa disciplina non abbia un ruolo importante nel fenomeno che sta dilagando negli ultimi decenni: la sesta estinzione di massa. Questo elaborato di tesi si pone lo scopo di indagare il ruolo del design ambientale nella salvaguardia degli animali a rischio di estinzione. Il testo guida il lettore in un percorso che inizia da una ricerca dal generale al particolare per studiare i rapporti tra gli animali e il mondo, gli animali e gli spazi urbani, gli animali e l’uomo. In particolare, viene presentato, attraverso uno studio di diversi esempi, l’influenza che il design può avere sulla percezione dell’uomo di una specie e di conseguenza sul suo impegno nel salvaguardarla. Successivamente una parte di analisi delle problematiche restringe il campo e si concentra su una specie, la balenottera comune, e un luogo, la parte nord occidentale del Mar Mediterraneo. Una delle principali cause dell’estinzione di questo esemplare è il traffico marittimo, le navi, infatti, producono dei suoni che interferiscono con le vocalizzazioni emesse dalle balenottere comuni. Il progetto di questa tesi si pone dunque l’ambizioso obiettivo di proteggere le balene da questa minaccia e di far avvicinare l’uomo a questa specie che spesso risulta lontana e poco conosciuta, ma di sicuro importante per la sopravvivenza dell’essere umano. Visto il duplice intento che l’idea si pone, è stato necessario suddividere il progetto in due parti: una sommersa dedicata alle balene ed una emersa per l’uomo. La parte sommersa è costituita da un’autostrada silenziosa con pareti fonoassorbenti in grado di bloccare i suoni emessi dalle navi e lasciar passare quelli dell’animale. La parte emersa, invece, è composta da una serie di piattaforme galleggianti che permettono all’uomo di avvicinarsi all’animale. Si tratta di un progetto che si sviluppa in fasi, a questa fase di progettazione dovrà seguirne una di prototipazione, ma senza dubbio quest’idea pone solide basi per un possibile futuro in cui le balene non saranno più a rischio di estinzione.
